Dh's old ipod has a cracked screen and barely visible now. I wanted to get him a new ipod touch for Christmas. If bought directly from Apple, they'll engrave the back for free. Also offer free shipping.

Amazon sells it for around $11 cheaper but no engraving.

I was thinking to get his name and cell # in case he loses it but what are the odds it gets returned?
Probably slim but you never know. I had my lost camera returned at MK.

Do you think it's worth it?

We ordered our daughter's from Apple because of the engraving...so my answer would be yes. There are many times that she has it with her for school functions, such as band trips and wrestling meets (she does the stats), so I thought it was an extra measure of safety should someone "claim" it was their Ipod. Plus when she opened the gift, she really liked the fact that it had her name on it! :goodvibes

If someone is going to return it, they will do it whether you have it engraved or just have a picture with all your info in the pictures file. That being said, if it is only $11 more, I would do it.

BTW, have you thought of getting an extended warranty? We get the ones from Square Trade and include accidental damage. They sent me a check within a week when we sent them our computer with a broken screen. You can usually find a promotion code to get 20-40% off the warranty price. It was a lot cheaper than the one I got at Best Buy with my DS' Ipod Touch. Of course, someone stole it, so the accidental coverage didn't help much.

What about tax? I too am trying to decide where to order from. The engraving sounds like a good idea especially for dd12.

My husband bought me my first Nano through Apple's online store and had it engraved with my nickname. He bought the 2nd one through Costco so no engraving. I miss that engraving. I say go for it.

Apple does charge tax if they have an Apple Store in your state.

I got the engraving for my middle DS - he absolutely loves having his engraved. I was so wishing oldest DS' nano had the engraving when it went missing at a scout event. I think one of the other kids took it as he was only allowed to use it during their travel and swears he left it in the car. :headache:

The one thing to remember with the engraving - if you have it engraved the sales is final so if you change your mind you are out of luck.

We purchased the girls nano direct from apple to just for the engraving. The might not beleive in Santa much longer, but as long as the have them they will know Santa loves them with Hugs and Kisses.

MacMall does engraving as well. I have gotten one from there personalized. They are a huge seller of Apple products.

If you are a upromise member, they have some coupons for $ off itouches, and you get 2% cash back. Apple does 1% thru upromise, I think.

FYI if you engrave then if you ever plan of selling it in the future there is no resale value.

I would personally wait for black friday deals...Best buy usually offers a GC and a good deal with the Ipod Touch

also FYI..Check CL...Apple just had a special where they gave Touches free with a macbook purchase to students and many of them are selling them on CL much cheaper than Apple

Another thing to think about - will your son want to put the iPod Touch into some kind of a case? It seems that most people (myself included) have some kind of case covering the back of the iPod - so the engraving would not even be visible. Of course, he would still know that it is there.

I would go with the engraving.

I just bought a Zune for my DD13 and I engraved her middle name and a quote plus a picture on the back. Through Zune it cost $25 more than from Walmart but I love the engraving idea and thought it was worth it.

false. I just had soemone with an engraved model (3rd with 32GB) on our company listserv and he sold it within 2 minutes of posting. It was less than a yr old. Got a good price too.

Then we have someone else that tried to sell a used one for the price of the new touches.. I corrected her on the price. She didn't sell it.

I was going to say the same thing. My DH got my Ipod from there with engraving two christmas ago and said it was a good $20 cheaper.

I never get mine engraved because when it comes time to upgrade, it's easier to sell. I sell my phones and electronics through an online website, and they give you a much higher price with no engraving.

But, for a kid, I think engraving is a good idea. People seem to return items when there's a name and number on it.

OP here,
Wow, so many responses. You guys are great! :worship:

This isn't for our kids, it's for dh. His old one with cracked display is probably 5 yrs old so I feel like we got our $'s worth.

I like the idea of having a phone number on it. There are still plenty of honest people who would return it and this would make it fast & easy.
We have a little laser printer type label maker that dh used to put our phone # on our kids' PSPs and Nintendo DS's. Unbeknownst to us at the time, ds10 brought his DS Lite to an arcade type place for his birthday party. Why, I don't know.:confused3 and lost it in the big ball pit room. An employee turned it in and call us right away. I wanted to give him/her a reward but that person wasn't there when I picked it up and no one knew who turned it in.
Dh isn't so careless but still, stuff happens.

I'm used to always going with the cheapest route possible but in this case, it may be worth the extra $. We wouldn't return it just b/c we've changed our minds. He gave me a Touch for my bday in June and I love it, and he does too.
If it were defective, could we return it? or are we really stuck with it?

No engraving on ours, but I simply made the lock page wallpaper a photo that I added text to with our name, phone # & email address. Its the first screen you see when you turn it on & are asked the passcode. And if we ever want to sell it, the other people aren't stuck with our info engraved on it.

Free.

Bought ours at Walmart.

I put an address sticker on the bottom of our cameras. Could do the same to the iPod & then slip it into its case.

OP, Apple has its 1 year warranty, regardless of the engraving. You can purchase Apple care as well. If you have to have it replaced anytime in that 2 years, Apple will re-engrave it

How much would it cost to get engraved? If it is more than 11 dollars then you might as well buy it from apple direct.

Other thing to consider normally when you buy direct from apple you can take items to the store if have troubles. The genius bar can help you out...not sure if you get that when you buy from somewhere else.

The Apple warranty and Applecare apply wherever you bought it. :)
