Ok, so what are the significant differences, besides obviously the iphone has a phone?

The prices seem way out of line. I bought an iphone GS 16 GB today for $199.00.

My daughter wants an ipod touch (not saying she'll get it, but I am looking into it) for Christmas. The least expensive model, 8 GB, is $199.00. This to me seems like a rip off. A 16 gig model is $299.00

Of course, I know that the phone has a $30/mo. fee, but leaving that aside, is there any earthly reason an ipod touch is worth so much more?

I've been wanting to know this, too.....I'm looking forward to reading the responses. :)

Yes. It doesn't have a $30/mo. fee.

It's really as simple as that. You'll pay $360 for a year's contract - and aren't they two year contracts? Apple wouild like to make as much profit as possible and if they can't get you to sign a contract they will most certainly look at the original cost as a means to make their profit.

You can't really just look at it in traditional ways anymore - that's not the business model they are using. Except for phone service, the Touch does most of what you would use an Iphone to do, and you're not having to pay for any data package. Of course, you can only get service when you are near a wireless network, but that's the price you pay for "free" internet access. And really, many homes (I was going to say most but I don't really know that) are wireless so it's probable that most Touches sold are going to homes where a good wireless connection is possible.

Not sure where you live, but the MSRP for a 32G iPod Touch is $299.

You pay less up front for the iPhone because the pricing is subsidized through Apple/AT&T. You have to sign up for the 2-year contract which, as has been mentioned, will have to include a $30/month data plan in addition to your normal wireless costs per month. AT&T gets you in and locked into the contract by dangling the iPhone with greater capacity for much less than the same size iPod Touch. That's what they did to me, and I couldn't be happier. :goodvibes I had a BlackBerry Bold (9000) before this and also was carrying a 16 GB iPod Touch to work every day to listen to music, watch movies, etc. When I found out that a 32GB iPhone would cost less than a 32GB Touch--I had been wanting to upgrade in size for a long time, as I hate having to micromanage my library on a daily basis to add new movies and take off the ones that I've watched, etc.--I bit. I was able to sell both the Bold and Touch on ebay and ended up getting back more than what I paid for the iPhone ($299, on launch day), so it was a win-win all the way around.

In terms of service, that was also a huge upgrade. I used to have people complain about call quality on my end--they were hearing loud bursts of static, that kind of thing, not to mention regular dropped calls. I also had reception problems inside my apartment, but they were somewhat intermittent. Since I switched to the iPhone, no one has said anything about call quality; in fact, it's a little disturbing how well they can hear EVERYTHING that's going on on my end. I was talking to a guy with my bank the other day when I was having problems with my debit card; he had me go into Walgreens, which was my next stop, and check out while he was on the line with me so he could see the transaction go through. While I was waiting in line, he said, "So...Kenny Rogers, huh?" because that's what Walgreens was playing on their in-store sound system, and not loudly at all, yet he heard it very clearly. So apparently now I have to behave myself on the phone and can't sneak a bite of sandwich or something while someone's babblin' away at me anymore.

the reason I'm not concerned about the $30 data fee per month is that my previous phone have tv on it, which cost $30 per month, so it's a wash for me.

I use my ipod touch as an iPod and my iPhone as a phone...does she need a new cell phone? If you have to pay to break her contract and then sign her up with AT&T it might be pricey? The $30 fee is only for the internet, so you'd have to pay her monthly phone bill as well.
