I'm going to get an Ipod Touch with my birthday money. :yay:

Should I get a refurbished 16GB or a new 32 GB?

What's the real difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation?

Also, what case should I get? Are there other things I need?

I'm TOTALLY new at all this.

First question, why would you go for a refurbished with less memory over something brand new with more memory?

To answer your question, the newer model offers voice control so you can tell it to play songs or skip a song. It's a faster version, and I also believe it comes with a camera which the others don't.

As for cases, that would be personal preference. You can get screen protectors from best buy that just cover the screen, but I think a case is handy too.

I got a 3rd gen 32 gb iPod for my birthday, too. I am so in love with it that it almost makes me want an iPhone (but I detest AT&T with every fiber of my being)...

I got the 32gb because my previous iPod was a 30gb Video and I had about 45% of it used with my music and videos (I am an absolute music nut). I figured I wouldn't need much more than 32gb, and so far I'm at about 16gb. I guess your capacity choice depends on how much music/video you have...but I've heard nothing but good things about Apple's refurbed iPods...

As far as cases, that would be a personal preference. I currently have a pink case with the touch pad "exposed" (I have a screen protector over the touch screen), but since I tend to carry mine in my purse, I'm thinking I may get a case that can cover the screen more completely...

Have fun with your new toy, whichever one you decide to get!

Sam's club has the 64GB (I kid you not) for under $380.

Just another option for you in this world of digital pictures and readily accessible downloadable videos.

I'd go for the 32gig Itouch more memory means more music and videos or better yet get an Iphone, it works as an mp3 player, a digital camera, and a mobile phone at the same time. I currently own an iphone 3gs and it works perfectly for me. Just my 2 cents

Why....uhhhh MONEY??? That matters to me that's why I did my homework.

I've owned ipods for years so I know how much memory I truly need, which is NOT a lot. My son wants the touch and I chose to get one for myself. I had a nano and never filled it up. My son has a 30gb video and it's almost half full. Neither has the wifi I want and that's why I'm getting the touch.

The apple website and the CNET website will give you all the info you need to make a decision for YOUR needs. I don't need the camera and the voice control is something I could do without. Everyone has different needs.

As for the CAMERA ... cute article: http://gizmodo.com/5355753/why-there-is-no-camera-in-the-ipod-touch-and-why-that-sucks :lmao:

Thanks for everyone's thoughts! I think I'm going to go with the 32GB. While I would love an IPhone, I just can't justify a $100/month cost. I really don't use my cell phone that much--in fact, I use a Tracfone.

So, now what apps should I get?

Not to hijack your post, but my DS is wanting one for his B-day - he's asked for a 3rd gen. one.

Does anyone know where/how to get the best deal on one?? Are any on sale anywhere?

Thanks - again, I don't mean to hijack - but if you haven't actually purchased yours yet - the info might help!!

Im planning on getting dd one for christmas but the 8GB one. she doenst use all of her space now on her nano so I think we will be fine. I may splurge for dh the larger one since he has been talking about it also. Most likely I will purchase right from apple.com to get the engraving for free..

I've only got an 8 gig and I love it. Probably 50 apps, a fair share of podcasts, family photos, and a smattering of video(both TV and a movie or two).

The Disney apps I have paid for include the Disney Dining App, the new Toy Story Mania app, and one of the Epcot interactive map. On top of that there's great freebies from Ebay or Amazon. The Touch comes loaded with the Safari web browser and a configurable link to e-mail(I use mine with gmail). No matter what you're interested in, there's a ton of apps you can tap into.

The only thing I wish I could do is surf-on-the-go. But like you, I can't justify the monthly fee that an iPhone would entail.

I just got the 32gb touch ($279-- costco; plus they had discounted itunes gift cards-- $55 for $60 of cards) and it is AWESOME! :thumbsup2

Yes, sometimes I wish it was connected everywhere like an iPhone, but not for $100 a month. Here is the case I got-- I love it; it fits perfectly (3G is same size as 2G) and comes with a screen protector, great deal for the price:

If you want to use your touch for scheduling, calendars, to dos, appointments, etc., I highly recommend the PocketInformant app-- it's pricey at $12.99 but it is fantastic, and you can sync it with other calendars too (google, etc.)

Enjoy!! :cloud9:

If you are looking to get him an 8GB there is no difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation, the difference in the processor speed applies to the higher gig touch.
There is a software update that you could get for a 2nd gen, it comes standard on an 8GB 3rd generation but only costs $5 on itunes so you can update a 2nd gen.

The main difference between the 2nd gen and 3rd gen is the voice command, which is kind of fun to play with :cool1:

I just recently bought an iTouch, and opted for the 64gig. I figured that if I'm going to start putting my photos on it, the space might get used up. I used to have an 8gig nano, which didn't hold ALL my music. I've been adding stuff to iTunes a lot since I got the iTouch and I'm now up to 12gig of music, and still lots more to add. I can see how I might easily fill the 32 gig between music and pictures, so the 64gig seemed like a good plan to me.

One thing that i haven't seen mentioned, especially for those considering buying gifts: if you buy from the apple online store, they usually provide free shipping, and free engraving on the ipod...and the shipping is pretty quick. Mine came from China in 6 days.

I just wish it had a camera. Would have seriously loved an iPhone, but I spend a significant amount of time in a location where at&t has no service, so that got ruled out pretty quickly.

But you can still surf at hot spots like Panera, right?

I'm thinking about asking for one from DH for Christmas. My new car has an iPod adapter thing built in to play it on the radio, but I don't have an iPod to use it!!

I have the 1st generation 32GB touch. My advice is get the biggest one (memory) you can afford. I know they did away with the 16gb, and now have the 8, 32, and 64gb's. Apple is always adding updates to the software/hardware.

I went to best buy today to look at them and they told me that the voice command is ONLY for the larger models not the 8GB. He also told me they changed their extended warranty to include accidental which is a big plus for me.. $49.99 for two years. I think Im leaning towards best buy now..
