My son wants an ipod for his 13th birthday and I am considering the Ipod Shuffle. Anyone on here using one and could tell me what they think of it. The Ipod mini also looks good, but I am a bit apprehensive about spending that amount of money if he were to lose it.

The shuffle doesn't appear to have a screen though to scroll through the music. It looks so incredibly tiny too.

The reason that it doesn't have a screen that shows the music is because you cannot choose the music...... it plays the music in RANDOM order - hence the name "iPod shuffle".
It seems like a strange concept to me, but it is ALOT cheaper than the regular iPods.

Shuffles have lower capacities but are the newest "in thing" so this may count for quite a bit. Sound quality is meant to replicate the other two players, ie. "great".

Chad, we know there are great alternatives, but in the case of an early teenage boy image quite often is everything. The public is not always cold and logical - although we may well wish otherwise. Sorry :(

my wife and I each have an ipod and love them. I played with a shuffle at an apple store the other day and I have mixed views. decent price point and storage, but the randomness thing I don't get either. that's what made the ipod so great, the control over your music. it does sound nice, but I'd srop the money on a mini. he'll guard it with his life. :)

I say ditch the ipod shuffle idea for sure (What the use of not being able to chose what you want to listen to?!) and the mini and go straight for the ipod 20 gig. Sure, it's 300 dollars, but the mini is 250, and for 50 more dollars you 16 gig more! That's A LOT.

Personally I have the 40 gig ipod photo and I gaurd it with my life and I've got serious skills in losing things.

That isn't exactly true. You can SHUFFLE or PLAY IN ORDER. You order your playlist in Itunes and then load it to the Shuffle. You can play, pause, skip, hold, repeat or shuffle with the controls on the IPOD. You can not search for a specific song or artist on the Shuffle.

For $99.00 - holds 120 songs and plays for up to 12 hours. I think it is an excellent choice for a teenager.

A couple of other neat features - especially for the price:

iPod shuffle Features
Personalize your iPod shuffle with iTunes:
Autofill from your entire music library for a fresh mix
Autofill from specific playlists
Drag and drop songs
Control your music with the simple button interface
Take it everywhere — it weighs only .78 of an ounce
Wear iPod shuffle with the included lanyard
Run, jump or shimmy down to skip-free playback
Enjoy up to 12 hours of continuous playback
Play MP3, AAC and audiobooks
Fill iPod shuffle in a flash via USB
Charge in four hours via USB or optional Power Adapter
Store files along with your music

I have the 1GB and I LOVE it!! I use it mainly for exercise and just got the convertor to play it in the car. It does seem to do better at "shuffling" music that playing the list how you put it in the iPod. It is very easy to use....and VERY small....think pack of gum small. I actaully had 275 songs on mine. Another great thing, it is SOOOO easy to change your music....and it is doen easily and quickly once you have your music uploded to your computer. I think it wold be a great gift for a teen. I would also consider getting the extended warranty since hte batery can't be replaced.

PM me of you have any questions. I will be happy to try to answer them.

Well, we got the shuffle for DH and he loves it! His first ipod. I got the one for $99 and he seems to be a nice size for him, he only has about 45 songs in there so far, he's still searching on Itunes!
Thanks

Last weekend I went to get my son one. We ended up with the Creative Zen Micro for him. I was told by 2 different stores to stay away from an ipod for a younger person. They seem to break very easy. He loves his.

I've heard good things about these but the world being as it is can't find one anyway. Not as if I'd switch, but it's an interesting thing to note - could go the same way as beta.

I have dropped mine NUMEROUS times and mine is just fine. I do have an iSkin for it, though. Plus, at elast 4 guys I work with have them and at least 2 of them have dropped them and they were fine. Maybe we got lucky, but I'm not buying that the Zen Micro would be all that much better at absorbing abuse.

I have a Shuffle and absolutely love it. I use it for running and it is tiny enough to fit in the key pocket in my running shorts even. It sounds great, is easy to use, and was pretty cheap.

That's not completely correct: You can play the songs either in a predertimined order or activate the shuffle-feature. But there are other flashROM-mp3-players available with the same storage capacity and a screen at a better price. Nevertheless I'd prefer the iPod anytime. I got a 40G and a 20G iPod and love 'em.
