My beloved iPod 60GB Classic that I bought refurbished in 2006 has finally met it's demise:sad1:. During it's lifespan, it had been synced to 3 different desktops (none of which are currently operable) and 2 different laptops.

I would like to get a replacement and since I had such a great experience with the first refurbished one, I would like to replace it with another refurbished model. I mainly use it for movie storage so that I don't need to worry about DVD's getting lost around the house. My current movie/music library is less than 30GB and I primarily only add the Disney movies that come with the digital copies so my immediate need is for what will adequately hold my current movies and still have room to grow.

Right now, I'm looking at a 64GB iPod Touch and the 160GB iPod Classic. I don't know what generation the Touch is but it doesn't appear to have a camera so I know that it is a bit older. Also, it is only $249 so I'm guessing it is a 1st or 2nd generation. I have a 4G smartphone with unlimited data so the internet and streaming features of the Touch are not a necessity. The 160 Classic is only $209 refurbished. I am/was completely satisfied with my Classic and I already have a fairly new case for it too.

Here's my questions...

1) Is the extra $40 worth it to get the connectivity of the Touch? I work on an ambulance and I am frequently around wireless hotspots so it would be nice to use it instead of my phone to stream Netflix and check my email. But, in addition to the additional purchase price, I would also need to purchase some protective devices...screen protectors, case, etc. Would it be worth it?

2) How easy will it be to put my current library (on my netbook) onto the new iPod? IIRC, it asks if I want to replace the library on the COMPUTER with the library on the iPod...which would be NOTHING on a new one. So, how do I do this:confused3.

I think I am leaning towards the Touch since it is actually bigger than the old relic that I currently use, but I have no experience with this model? Is is reliable? Durable? (My Classic survived the toilet AND the washing machine!)

I think I will add a poll...

64GB Touch at $249

or

160GB Classic at $209

Somebody techier can give you a better answer, but I just synced my daughter's touch on the computer and iTunes basically walks you through it. You won't need to sync much after your initial one, since you can add music straight from the ipod.

Well, in terms of saying you would have to buy a cover - I think you would still need to do that. The new classics are not the same size as the old ones, AFAIK. So unless you plan on no case with the Classic and a case with the Touch, I think that's a wash. Screen protector - I use one on our phones and Touch, but not totally necessary.

Are you using or going to use iCloud? That may impact how much memory you need. Normally, I always say get the most you can afford, but I'm starting to change that opinion a bit with the introduction of the iCloud.

I would get the Touch even w/less memory - you will love all the apps & things (and the camera/video camera - edited - oh I see an older one with no camera, so skip that thought), I think - unless you already use a phone for those type of things. The Touch is basically an iPhone, without the 3G and phone part. And now that I see you are talking an older one - I would try and get a 4th generation one refurbished.

And it's very easy to transfer your iTunes music to a new device. It will know as soon as you plug it in to the computer that is a new device and will walk you through setting it up.

Thanks for the info:thumbsup2.

I talked to a very helpful young lady at Best Buy yesterday. She told me how to deauthorize all of the computers that I no longer have and she also explained how easy it would be to transfer my iTunes library from my netbook to my new iPod.

With DH's approval, I went ahead and ordered the 64GB Touch today. Even though it doesn't have a camera (which I don't need anyway) I think I will still like it more than the Classic.

I'm hoping to get back into the gym soon too (resting a bad back) so I will need to find a nice armband or case of some sort. I just hope that this one will get me another 5+ years.

One question about the cloud...how is it different than storing my stuff in iTunes on my laptop? I have PC's and an Android phone so the iPod is my only Apple product.

I think you made a great choice! Many more options with the touch...and I also have a 3rd generation without the camera and love it. I bought it on a great clearance sale and do not regret it.

I have a question for you though. How do you deactivate your accounts on other computers? We just bought a new computer....older model is in DD9's room. My original iTunes account is on the old computer....whenever I try to sync to the iTunes on my new computer it tells me that I will need to erase all data and reboot my device with the info stored on the new computer as you cannot sync to more than 1 iTunes. I thought I only had 1 account though.....really frustrating.

caribear - it sounds like you have 2 Apple IDs. One on the old computer and one on the new computer. So when you try to sync your device to the new computer (with a different ID it sounds like), that's why you're getting that message.

I would exit iTunes on the new computer and re-open it and log back in with the same Apple ID that you used on your old computer.

As for deactivating, while in iTunes on the computer you want to deactivate, it is a choice up in the tool bar - on my Mac, it's under "Store" - just look down and one of the choices is "Deactivate this computer". That means that computer will not be able to play your music in iTunes any longer. And I think there is a time limit on when you can re-activate it against the same Apple ID (not sure how long - maybe a month?).

I don't think I can answer the question based on your situation. We have many Apple products and no PC or Android items, so I don't know what would make sense in your situation. Sorry.

Thanks for the info! I only have 1 Apple ID, but because my iPod was originally synced to the old computer I am having problems saving the data and re-syncing with the new computer. It keeps telling me I have to erase all data to sync to the new computer....which I do not want to do. I keep looking online for info, but can't find anything that I really understand! I haven't synced my iPod in over 6 months...and I really want to download some new music that is on the new computer....without losing all my older music that is originally on my old computer. Ack! Too complicated for me!
