iPod or Zune?

So I was going to be a 4GB iPod last night, but one of the salesman suggested the Zune instead. Anyone have a particular preference? They say the second generation Zune is a good competitor to the iPod. I mostly want it for music and audio podcasts (particularly Disney podcasts). The 4GB iPod holds 1000 songs, but for $50 more I could get 2000 songs on the 8 GB iPod. Then the 80 GB that the salesman suggested can hold lots of video. That's good - how often I'd use it though would potentially make it an unwise purchase. I suppose if I missed a show I could catch the podcast airing of it.

Who likes which? And why? I'd love to hear from anyone on this.

I have a Zune and really like it. I have never had an ipod though, so nothing to compare it to. What is nice about the ipod though, is there are so many accesories for it, like docks and such, it is very limited for Zune.

I do have 2 movies downloaded on mine, the first 2 PoTC movies. I watch them when flying or I may do what a friend does on her MP3player. She watches a movie bit by bit on her work breaks.

Sounds like you really don't need the 80gb & depending on how many songs you have you probably can get the 4gb & be fine. Try the Zune & then try the IPod, I dont care for the Zune interface, but ITunes can sometimes not sync songs I have checked for some reason, but otherwise it is solid.

I brought the 80gb ipod and may go up to a 160 gb. That is because I mainly keep audio books on mine. I have about 63 downloaded from audible UK and USA) and about 12 books I put on from cd and I have still got about 50 gb left.

I'll throw another option into the mix. I highly recommend the Sony 4GB S610Walkman MP3 player. I bought DH one for Christmas and it's so awesome I'm treating myself to one. :) It's got a FM tuner in addition to being able to store up to 2,450 songs. The battery is awesome and it really holds a charge for a long time. The song quality is also good. We haven't played with the video much but I look forward to trying mine out.

We also own IPOD shuffles which we bought refurbished from the Apple website. They worked well.

I will say tho. that I wish the earbuds that came with these MP3 players had different size earpieces. My tiny ears don't work with the ones that come with these players. Anyone find anything that works with small ears?

I have a 30 GB Zune, and my husband just got an 8 GB one. We love them. There aren't as many accesories available for it, though. The only thing that's a bit tricky is trying to download music for it - the only thing I can get to work well is the Zune Marketplace.

I've never had, used (or even seen, I don't think) a Zune. But I have had iPods and I love them. I was kind of on the fence about whether I even wanted one...and now I can't believe I lived without it all those years.

I'd say get the iPod because there's a plethora of crap to go with it. But I'm not anti-Zune or anything.

Good luck with your decision.

the 8GB Nano holds 2000 for 199, for 50 more you can get the ipod classic, I just got the 8GB Nano, I WAS going to get the classic, but this is for the gym and it is much smaller, that is why I opted to do only the 8.

the ipods are just SO awesome!! I have had them for years..LOVE them!

That's a matter of opinion. :snooty:

I have a first-gen Zune, it's been great. Here's an in-depth review of the smaller second-generation Zune. http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/zune-redux.ars

Oh no, I didn't mean it like that!

I meant that iPods have *the brand name* which compensates for their shortcomings. I'm not saying that Zunes aren't cool and I'm certainly not saying that they're not decent players!

Of course, for the ULTIMATE brand name, you need to go Bang & Olufsen. Those players are even more brand conscious than iPods are.

I have the 4G Zune and like it. But I must agree with those that say the iPods have more accessories readily available.

I use mine only for working out. I liked it because the Zunes can also get radio stations. Not sure if iPods can do that. :confused3

I have really small ears, too, and every pair of earbuds I ever tried popped right out! The only ones that have worked are these...they come with three sizes of rubbery "buds", and the smallest one works great.....

(ps...I have had two Sansa MP3s, both worked great, now I have an iPOD Touch. How do I love thee, my little Touch, let me count the ways.....)

YIKES - 8g for $199???? I bought my sons the 30g Zunes for xmas for $99. Zune is made by Microsoft. Hmmm, seems a no brainer to me, especially given the cost difference.

I am sorry, but even thou I used to work for Microsoft, I would pay more for my APPLE! I am totally committed to APPLE, I own almost everything they have! You will find us Apple users very committed to the products!

OP here. How do you get the audio books on there? Do you pay to download those? Also, do podcasts only download onto the iPod when you're synced up with iTunes on your computer?
