and use them like an external hard drive? was going to get one for hubby for anniversary( he gets and ipod for $2-300, i get a camera for 800...hmm how fair is that) and know nothing about them but some have 30+ gb and can store pictures...but can you down load those pictures from a digital camera and then later from the ipod to the computer( to burn cds)? can't figure that out from the info. about them

yes you can to iPod but the transfer is slow, sucking power (make sure you have both devices fully charged before doing the transfer, if not and the transfer stopped in the middle, then you're toast, the data will be corrupted), and temperamental.

The device to help the transfer cost about US$100 (in Canada), for that same price I can get another 2 Gb Ultra II CF card which will fit another 450 pics at ISO 1600 or up to 550 pics at 50% at ISO 1600.

Yes you can use an iPod, you just need to get a Camera connector to do it - plugs into the bottom of your iPod, and you then plug the USB from the camera into it.

We've used our many times, and has always worked fine. I think you need to have one of the later iPods and not one of the original ones (at least a photo version), but don't quote me on it!

The only other thing is that once on there, you cannot either see them on the screen or, output them to a TV - I just cannot remember which one it is! Then all you do is plug into your PC/Mac when you get home and upload them.

As Kelly says, it does sap the power on the iPod really quickly. To be on the safe side I never uploaded more than 100 at any one time (at the maximum file size on my 300D), just to make sure that there was no chance that the iPod would run out of power part way through. Ofcourse you could have the iPod with you on the go and do whilst out and about, which I did do once or twice.
