My DH is going to get me an ipod or something like it for christmas this year and we know nothing about them. Can someone please fill me in on what we need to look for? I will be using it primarly for working out at the gym and maybe around the house too.

Should we just look at the ipods or are there other brands that are just as good? My sister said something about getting a refurbished one off of ebay but DH is not too crazy about that idea.

TIA!

There are other MP3 players but after looking into it, Ipod, which is an Apple product of course, I think, is the best. If you are looking for a discount on a new one, go to the Apple site. We found student discounts last year that were really quite good. Engraving was free.

The prices just dropped a few weeks ago, so my DH was given his Christmas present this past Monday.

The Nano is the smallest-and plays 2, 4 ,6 or 8 gigs. You'll get up to 2000 songs on the 8 gig. These are the colorful ones. That said, I don't think they're as cost effective. The 8 gig costs the same as the 30 gig

The iPod Videos are 30 and 80 gigs now. You'll still find 60 gig iPods in stores. Apple's prices are now 249 for the 30 gig and 349 for the 80 gig, while most of the 60's you'll find out there are also 349. The 30 gets 7500 songs, the 80 gets 20,000. I've downloaded podcasts onto it and love this feature. DH has been docking my iPod into the TV and watching them on the huge screen. The quality is amazing.

If you're just using it for working out, you'll probably find you don't need a huge unit. However, if you're at all bothered by the 'cost per song' and bump up to a Video. I'm so glad DH got me the video.

the funny part is that he bought me one figuring I'd tire of it in a few months and he could take it over. Nope, it goes EVERYWHERE-and gets used at work when we've got XM issues.

Here's a good resource for pre- and post- purchases. :)

I have a Nano and love it. I got a case from Marware that has a hand grip useful for running and an arm grip if you need to use your hands. :)

my dh has a nano, he was willing to sacrifice memory for the size of the unit. he takes it to work out and rarely uses it otherwise. my dd and i have ipod videos, we both enjoy d/l'ing tv shows and movies onto them. i also have the ihome under cabinet player so i can listen to tunes while cooking/cleaning.
i had several other mp3 players prior to my ipod and they all were junk. our ipods have all been terrific!

I was just at the Apple store a couple of days ago and I was told by a salesrep that the Nano is best for working out/running/ gym. It has something to do with the harddrive in the regular Ipods that can't handle the big movement from working out. Check that out before making a decision.

My DD14 wants an Ipod for Christmas. What is the cost per song for the downloads? I know nothing about these things! :confused3

Most songs on iTunes are 99 cents each. Does your DD already have a lot of CD's? Those can be uploaded using iTunes software. I've only purchased three songs from them so far, lol. (The benefit of DH and I being music junkies-lots of CDs to pull from)

Can you only download from iTunes when using an iPod?
The iTunes software will let you load any compatible music file on your PC to the iPod. I have about 20GB of MP3s on one of my PCs so I just keep refreshing my playlist with different songs from there. Or, yes, you could download songs directly from iTunes.

The technology I can handle...but what about the download sites other than iTunes? My kids say their friends use several peer sharing services, but they scare me to death. I hate messing with viruses! Plus there's the legality issue.

Anyone know good sites besides iTunes?

Well, Napster is now a pay site and there's a music download store at buy.com, too.

There's another site I usually use but it's located outside the US sooo..... ;)

Poohnatic,

My DD does have ALOT of music. So she can transfer what she already has to the Ipod? That would be great, I thought I was going to have to pay for all of it again! You know she probably already know what to do and I'm just a dummy!

Yep, trust me-it's very easy to upload music when you're using a program like iTunes. If my BIL can do it, anyone can! This is a man who did not have a computer or an iPod last year, now he's making mixes for his limo guests!
