Ipod Help - (I am clueless)

I would like to buy my niece and nephew an Ipod for Christmas. I see the mini is now extinct and it is replaced by the Nano. Also, looking at the Ipod shuffle but the nano just seems better (at least that's what they say). Can you only download music from itunes onto ipods or can you download your own cd's also. I have no idea how these work. Help!!

How old are your niece and nephew?

My teens both have shuffles and they seem to like them. There are no moving parts (to break....) and there are small enough to easily carry around and hide.

You load your discs into the computer and copy your music library onto itunes...or something like that. But yes, you can use the music on cds.

Music already on the computer can be found by iTunes then transfered to the iPod. CDs can be transferred (ripped) to the computer by iTunes and transfered to the iPod. One warning, when iTunes rips CDs to the hard drive, it's in Apple's music format. For most flexibility I use another program to rip the files as .mp3 (RealPlayer, Windows media player) and then point iTunes to the location.

Depends on the age of the kids, but I'd expect them to have this figured out by sunset Christmas Day.

They are 12 and 17. When they download CD's from itunes - do they have to pay for that as they would have to pay for each song??

When they record their own cds onto the computer to be used with iTunes there is no charge. When the buy music from the iTunes music store they are 99 cents per song. iTunes offers full albums as well and are usually a better value (if they do want all the songs).

You can do other things besides music on the ipod.

We have the ilingo software (language) for ourselves and our children.

I would consider getting an ipod that can support ilingo. Just my opinion.
