iPOD help-frown face- won't turn on

DDs ipod isn't working. When we try and turn it on, there is only a pic of a frowning ipod with an exclamation point.
I can't find any info on the website or on help to give me a clue what the problem might be. Any one have any ideas?
I tried to reformat and it said 'error' so I guess I am going to have to take it in....

a sad mac (frowning ipod) is a sign of a bad hard drive.

Take it to your closest apple store. If its under warranty they'll give you a new one.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. NO apple stores anywhere near here
We bought ours at Best Buy so will have to take it back there.
