I bought one of these to see how it would be to put my photos on it while travelling. It works quite well- fairly fast and I can view the photos after they are downloaded to it. Pretty nifty:) Much easier than bringing my laptop with me.

Now how does that work -- I have one of the 870gb video ipods, but haven't tried pictures.

I'd heard that it was _very_ slow... is that not the case?

regards,
/alan

There is a little adapter that connects your camera via its cable to the iPod. Plug it in and it transfers the photos. I only tranfered 6 photos(was just testing it) and it did it pretty fast- it did seem slower than the rate photos transfer to my laptop, tho. I may test it again with more photos. I plan on taking it to Disney at the end of the month. I don't travel with my laptop and have never backed up photos while travelling before but since I have this iPod and connector I figure why not use it. The connector was $29 at the Apple Store.

The result of my little test- 132 pictures in about 8 mins. Slow but better than nothing. That was using my D50(6mp-high/fine setting)

I have an Archos 404 - much nicer than an iPod for storing digital pics! Larger screen, easier to navigate (I hate that stupid wheel), super fast transfer both from camera and to computer, AND you can charge it WHILE you are transferring - instead of draining your iPod battery!

The Archos 404 is 30gb and about $180. Good for music, videos, docs, and pics. There is also a 504 with a slightly bigger screen, and is available in 30gb, 40gb, 80gb, and 120gb.

I HIGHLY recommend an Archos! Don't be an iSheep!

The iPod will do. It was given to me so it cost me nothing except the $29 for the connector.

Can you upload RAW files to this device? I don't think you can on the ipod but I might be wrong about that.

Boy! I just got 34 messages in my mailbox for 1 response to this thread:eek:
What I find takes forever with the iPod is syncing pictures from the computer to it- they seem to go from camera to iPod fine(could be my computer). Honestly- I rarely use it for anything. My nephew(10) wanted a nano so my sister gave it to me months ago. I have 300 songs on it and 2000 photos- have listened to it once and looked at the pictures a couple times(showing people mostly). Putting pictures on it while on vacation would just be for backup- I wouldn't use it as a viewer. I looked up the Archos- it looks cool. Do you need to buy the docking thing to be able to put pictures on it?

Ipods can be used as hard drives, hence it is possible to transfer any type of files/data to them. But can the IPOD display said raw images, I do not think so.

DH has the 160 gb Ipod Video and the connector from Ipod did not work...Any ideas if there is anything else out there of if Ipod will release a connector for the 160 classic?

I guess I just don't know how to upload and download something that can't be displayed by the ipod at this point in my ipod experience. I (well DD, not me) have only had an ipod since Christmas and am just learning how to use it (for her). I have no idea how to move stuff to it if I'm not in the itunes program and certainly have no idea how to get them back off again unless I am in itunes. I am guessing (again, I have no idea) that itunes would not show RAW files as being available to upload to your computer from the ipod as it would have no idea what those files were??? :confused3 I'm not looking to view the RAW files on the ipod, just mainly to store them while on vacations.

I am wondering if that other device mentioned here, the Archos 404, has any idea what RAW files are, or if it really matters. That seems like it works more like a small computer rather than a stand alone media player. I'd hate to screw up DD's ipod by trying something I wasn't sure about.

So I guess these little devices just have me totally confused. I will probably just buy a new laptop as much as I can't really afford it right now. :sad2:

Unfortunately, the Archos does not support RAW files according to the tech specs on the website. And yes, you need the docking station to transfer pics from your camera. There are two docking stations. One of them lets you hook it to your TV so it can be a DVR - the other one just charges and allows for data transfer. I get the simple one for $20 I think.

I wonder if they will have a version update that supports RAW images?

I just find the Archos a little easier to use - and it doesn't require iTunes! CompUSA used to have them in the store so you could go see one, but they've gone under; so that's no good.

When I bought my connector I thought the lady said it worked on any 'video' iPod. Mine is a 30GB classic.

We bought one and it worked on the 80 gb but not the 160...frustrating

Thing about RAW is that there is no standard and it would be impossible for anyone to know how to support RAW files that might appear on future cameras. It is just not as simple as supporting JPEGS(or other) that will be the same on next years new cameras.

I recently purchased two DIGITAL FOCI PHOTO SAFEs(do a google search), BHphoto was selling the 80 gig version for about the same price as this photo connector. It is a self contained portable external hard drive with built in memory card slots, it does a complete back up of memory cards inserted including RAW and VIDEO(any type of files). But it does not display the photos. When you get home you plug it in to your computer and it shows up as hard drive(in MY COMPUTER). BHphoto has since raised their price.

I took 2 RAW photos an downloaded them onto my iPod. They downloaded within seconds. When I tried to open them I got a message saying this photo format cannot be viewed on your ipod. Transfer them to the computer and synchronize thru itunes to display them on iPod. They show up on the iPod as a blank white box with RAW written on it.

HI, I have an older G3 iPod , but thought you couldn't transfer photos off and ipod, just the other way around? Am I wrong ( say yes!)
I use a mac, do you use a particular software program to sync back to iPhoto?
Thanks, Nancy
