iPhone Question about Backing up?

I have a 8 GB first generation iPhone and everytime I sync my phone to iTunes, it wants to do a full backup. Sometimes when I'm in a rush, I cancel the backup portion and just let my podcasts update and my calendar and contacts sync.

Yesterday I decided since it was early in the morning and I'd be stuck at my desk for most of the morning doing work, I would let iTunes do a complete backup of my phone. :surfweb:

IT TOOOOOOOK FOREVERRRRRRRR! I ended up cancelling towards the end because it appeared to be stuck.

I have:

2.65 GB Audio
102.3 MB Video
951.9 MB Photos
399.2 MB Apps
322.9 MB Other
2.79 GB Free

How much time should I allow for iTunes to do a complete backup of my iPhone? I really need to do one ~ just in case. But is it abnormal for it to take over 2/3 hours? If I get a phone call, my backup cancels.... frustrating.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a better place to post my iPhone "problems" in hopes of getting the help I sometimes need????

thanks everyone!

If I recall correctly, it is not unusual for the first full backup to take that much time. After the initial full one, they become incremental backups and should go much more quickly.

The first time I backed up my phone it did take a really long time. Subsequent times have been much shorter. Probably depends on how much new content you've added to your phone since the last time you backed up.

It also somewhat depends on which version of the software you are running. I believe 2.1 made the backup process much faster, but as others have said if it has been a very long time since your last backup then 3 hours or so is normal. Just start it and walk away once just so it can get done.

Do the backup overnight. Then it won't matter if it takes several hours.

Don't forget to put your phone into airplance mode! That way a phone call won't interrupt the process.
