iPhone or Android?

My current contract with AT&T is up next month.

I just can't decide if I want an iPhone, or an Android-type phone.

What I need in my new phone is...

  • INTERNET. This is what I want the most of from my phone. I want to update Facebook, fool around on the Dis, check info on Google, and use Map Quest if needed. Basically, I want my computer on a phone.

  • Obviously, I will need to make voice calls and the occasional text.

I am not all that interested in apps. Obviously, it is neat and would be fun, and I have seen some that I would download. I know some are free, but the good ones cost money, and I just can't see spending money every month for an app.

I'm drawn to the iPhone, because it looks so fun. Everyone has it and they all seem to be having so much fun using it.

I am drawn to the Android phones, because they really seem like little handheld computers.

At the same time, I know the iPhone is a "mini computer" as well.

So... tell me about your iPhone or Android!

Words can't describe how much I love my iPhone. I use it for EVERYTHING (well, it doesn't replace my laptop, but when I'm traveling or just out and not at home, it can come close!) I also use it as my primary iPod, so I was happy to be able to ditch my BlackBerry Bold (9000) (not that it was a bad device, but internet browsing on it was AWFUL and often crashed the phone outright. One can only take so many battery pulls in a day!) and my iPod Touch and consolidate devices that way.

Since you're already with AT&T, I assume you're happy with your network coverage there. That seems to be the main knock that comes up whenever anyone asks here about switching to the iPhone. You don't hear negative things about the phone; it's always about AT&T. Personally, I've been with AT&T for 11 years now and love it AND the phone. :goodvibes

Word right now (as of a few hours ago) is that the iPhone should be getting quite the overhaul come June or July or whenever they opt to release the new one (Jobs has said it'll be an A+ upgrade). I am psyched as can be, as I'm a major gadget nerd. I'll probably sell my 3GS to my brother at that time and get the new one, and I can't wait!

I can't say enough how happy I am that I have an iPhone! And there are TONS of free apps that are actually worthwhile, so don't worry about spending a fortune on apps if you don't want to.

Fair warning though--iPhones are addictive! Pretty soon it will become permanently attached to your hand and you'll feel the need to buy it pretty cases and stuff. ;)

And here I come along to ruin the party. :teeth:

I have both Verizon (personal mobile carrier with the EnV for me, and the Motorola Droid for my wife) and AT&T with the iPhone for work.

I hate, loathe and despise AT&T. Every single day it drops calls, loses signal; there are entire areas in the state of Florida (and up the eastern seaboard) where I cannot get a signal. If I only had AT&T I'd be in real trouble as I'd have no coverage in many places.

The iPhone compared to the Motorola Droid? Give me the Droid any day. It's ten times the phone (albeit heavier!) than the iPhone. I LOVE the keyboard. I have to keep the iPhone plugged into a charging source nearly all day every day. It's ridiculous.

I've had so much trouble and have had my work interfered with so much that my corporate office is switching BACK to Verizon and my new Motorola Droid is on its way to me as we speak.

Do what you will, but don't succumb to "everyone has one they must be wonderful." Get what will work best for you.

Granted, 99% of the problems are because of AT&T, but I'm not happy with the performance of the iPhone as compared to the Droid, either.

Be sure before you get into it.

Oh, and if it matters, yes. We are Mac people. :teeth:

I too had an Iphone and loved it. However, I hated AT&T. I live in coastal SC, and I'd drop several calls a day.

Now I have a droid and don't have that problem anymore.

I love my iPhone! I haven't touched a real pc in months! Now as for the Droid I saw on dateline or msnbc that it is # 1 for radiation output and if you feel light headed or have sudden headaches it's your phone. iPhone wasn't top of the list. I'm sure it was on there as all phones give out radiation but it wasn't in the top 10! Yay! Also here on Craigslist people are always trying to trade their phones and Droids for iPhones. I know your contract is coming to an end but if you're considering an iPhone the new 4g is coming out June 2010 so IMO it's worth the wait!  I myself am upgrading to the 4g when it comes out! Good luck in what you decide!

Oh God, the cases. Don't get me started on the cases. I actually have a big boot box full of them in the other room because I get bored looking at the same color all the time. I'm sort of afraid to count them because if the number of cases I have remains a sort of "abstract" concept, then my ridiculousness remains hidden (at least to me.)

But OP, if you decide to go with an iPhone and want case suggestions, I'd be happy to provide them. I've used most of the most popular ones out there as well as knockoffs of some other very popular ones and can tell you which ones look prettiest on a white iPhone  , provide decent drop protection, will fit in a dock, etc.

I too know what you mean on cases! Lol! I have many colored ones that I modified with Disney pins I bought! I bought doubles of my favs and broke off the pin and glued it to the back of my case! I even have a jeweled Tigger one I'm working on now with swarovski crystals in a tiger pattern! I can't wait till it's finished!

Cool! You'll have to post pics once you get it done! :)

You are just the person I need to talk to! I have an iphone; have had it since initial release. I love the internet on this, and do not want to go to a phone where the web looks like it does on a blackberry. I want it to look just like home, only smaller.

My question is about the droid and how it works compared to Safari on the iphone. The rest of my family is on Verizon and I would save a LOT of money by having the droid on the family plan. Any thoughts?

Yep. Switch to Verizon and get the Droid Motorola. It's a great phone, faster than my iPhone and zips around the internet much more easily than the iPhone.

Go to a Verizon store and try one out, don't just take MY word for it! LOL.

Seriously. Better phone, wicked better carrier! ::yes::

I adore my Droid. I swear I'm addicted to it. You won't ever need mapquest again if you get one. One of the apps is google maps and it navigates for you!!! The droid also flips to give you a real keyboard. And verizon has better service.

i don't have the iPhone but DH and i tried AT&T a while back and the service was horrible. we had problems with dropping calls constantly, too and not getting service in certain areas.

not to mention at the time the phones were HORRIBLE. if there was ANY sort of backround noise while you were on the phone, you couldn't hear anything on the other end.

For Droid users out there..

Anyone sync the droid with an exchange server at their job? I currently have a Blackberry and we currently use BES with our exchange server. Im looking to maybe change to a droid but Im looking for info on how it sync with exchange..

Anyone have any experience with it?
