Hi everyone, I'll be heading to the world real soon and decided I wanted to travel real light while in the parks. I love taking pictures of the "world" and of my son while we are on vacation. I have the iPhone 5s and it seems to take VERY clear and sharp pictures, much better than the 4s.

for this trip I plan om making a photobook when we get back.

What are your thoughts about the pro's and con's of just taking the iPhone.

thanks for your help:thumbsup2

I say do it, but, between MDE and photos/videos, you may want to take a power pack to recharge on the go.

IMHO whether or the not the iphone will be sufficient or not really depends on your expectations as a photographer.

If your goal is to simply take snapshots of family / friends, characters, etc... in conditions where lighting is not a problem, then the iphone should be fine.

For me personally the iphone would not be the best tool because I like to take "dark ride" shots, shots of night time shows, sunset shots, firework shots, close ups of animals that may be far away, etc.... Attempting to photograph those types of shots to my own personal standards require more flexibility than provided by an iphone.

I also agree with Wunkmom regarding her suggestion about bringing a charger with you. If you are going to be aggressively using your iphone for pictures you do not want find yourself in a situation where your phone has little or no power. That is one of the things I always hated about my iphone...the fact I could not simply swap out the battery if I needed to. My Android phone allows me to bring extra batteries and swap them out as needed.

+1 to that! I have an iPhone5 and it does ok for snapshots but for anything more demanding it falls short. I have tested it against a mirrorless and the phone comes out second best every time. There is no control: one aperture; ? shutter; ? ISO...
It does HDR and that helps much of the time, if you are going to use only the iPhone then set it to HDR

On my last trip I still took a few shots with my iPhone 5 and they were fine if there was plenty of light.

Night photos with the flash produced "white eye".

I wouldn't have been happy if all my pictures wre taken with the iPhone.

I have plenty of "real" photography experience, but I still enjoyed roaming the MK with just my iPhone5 one night. It was freeing and I will definitely do it again. (I think I have a few pics in the link in my signature.)

A lot of people don't realize there are things the iPhone camera can do besides just a quick snapshot. For instance, you can make a dark scene lighter by touching a dark part of the scene with your finger. You can also digitally zoom by "pinching" the screen, which brings up a zoom line on the bottom. (My, what teenagers can teach you! )

Maybe we need a thread just for iPhone technology, and how to make the best of it. I think a lot of us probably aren't using them to their fullest.

A lot of people don't know how to make the best of their smartphones. I agree. However, a lot of the features are smoke-n-mirrors to making a smartphone image look better. Anything a phone can do, a good P&S will do better.

That said, I was one of the "I must bring a SLR to Disney" people. But if I had to, I "could" do Disney on a iPhone 4s or newer. To me, smartphones entered a serious, usable phase starting with the 4s. My weapon of choice now is the Sony RX100. But I won't condemn anyone anymore who uses good smartphone tech. I'd just bring spare batteries.
