just wondering what anyone with an iphone thought of the insurance options. i just got one and att's plan (11.99 mo, plus $149 deductible for replacement) seems a bit too steep. Is it a terrible idea to go with out it? I know accidents happen and I dont want to shell out $600 for a new phone.

Try SquareTrade. Make sure to search the web for a current discount code before buying coverage.

HTH!

I believe I got gadgetguard which is an app you can get with the iphone when you get the phone.

Do you normally break your phones? I've had the iphone since Day 1. I've never had insurance. I've never broken it. I have, however, dropped it more than once on a treadmill in the gym without damaging it.

Just read about cell phone insurance today, and why it is considered wasteful spending on the consumer's part. Here's the link to the news article. Cell phone insurance info is in the last paragraph:

Here's the link to the Apple store too. You should not be spending $600 for an Iphone. The newest Iphone 4 is $299, for the larger capacity 32GB model.

That's with a 2 year contract. If you aren't available for upgrading your contract, it's $200-300 more

Couldn't you break your contract for $175, and get a new contract with the $299 Iphone 4? It's a pain in the rear, but would they allow it? Just thinking out loud here. $475 is still cheaper than $600...if you can do this.:thumbsup2

IMO: No insurance just a good quality case to protect it like an OtterBox

From what I've heard, State Farm offers insurance also!

OP here, Ive never lost or broken a cell phone. I have a shuffle and an ipod touch and have never had problems with those either. Thanks for making me re-think it.

ATT early termination fee is $325 so that's not quite right. Then when you add in all of the fees to start a new account and you're past the no contract amount. FWIW, Apple has been replacing broken iphone 4 models for $199, so the ATT insurance isn't a good value in my opinion.

The Apple store will replace a broken one for $199, I think. I didn't know ATT had started offering it, but that is WAY too expensive. If you want one to cover water and loss, SquareTrade is a good plan. Applecare is great for extending the 1 year warranty.

DH and I have SquareTrade warranties on both of our iphones. I thought it was a reasonable deal. They frequently offer specials, so we got them for $80 with a $50 deductible. I broke the LCD screen on mine because I did not want the bulky OtterBox like DH. SquareTrade offers coverage for all mishaps, unlike ATT, but when I went to Apple Store to purchase a $199 refurb that SquareTrade would later reimburse me for, to my surprise Apple Store just GAVE me a whole new phone!! The 2y squareTrade warranty now goes with the new phone and all is well. With 2 smallish kids it's nice to know that the coverage is there for me at a reasonable price. I am totally happy eventhough I did not need to use it.

Double check that. When I was looking into warranties, I read the ST warranty was phone specific. It may have only been if they paid out on one, the warranty had fulfilled and it wouldn't carry over. When I bought a ST for another item I think I had to give the serial number. Hopefully it does switch.:)

You just need to give ST the serial number for the replacement phone. :thumbsup2

Your iPhone is worth a lot of money. That means you would have to pay a lot of money to replace it if it were stolen or damaged.
You simply buy your iPhone insurance online. You are covered instantly as soon as your online payment is made. That could be within 3 minutes from now. Then you will receive your documentation within 10 - 20 days with all the necessary Terms and certificate of insurance etc.

Then you're covered. It is as simple as that!
