iPhone at Wal-mart

There has been a bunch of buzz lately on the internet about Wal-mart selling the iPhone. I don't see why this even matters. They are selling it for $2 less than other stores. I just do not see the point in this. If someone is wanting to buy an iPhone, why don't they just buy it at an AT&T store? It's the same price. There is no advantage to buying one at Wal-mart. They still have to sign up for a 2 year agreement through AT&T. If there is no AT&T store in their area, there most likely isn't any AT&T service either. Could someone explain to me why this is news-worthy?

I bought one of the new ones in August thru At&T. What a pain!

The AT&T staff were nice - but it took multiple trips to get a straight answer about anything. I live in two states - but I cannot have numbers in different area codes. The AT&T service drops calls ALL the time. At least 5-6 times a week - all across the country.

I love the iphone - but detest the service you have to use.

I'm not sure why that is news worthy at all.

I actually bought mine through Best Buy instead of AT&T because I was able to get insurance on the phone, which AT&T does not offer. I already had to use it once, so I'm thankful I did choose Best Buy!

How funny... I Love At&T, it's the only one the does NOT drop calls here.

I think the buzz regarding the Walmart Iphone is the rumored Iphone Nano that is supposedly getting announced soon to be carried strictly at Walmart. It is said to be a stripped down version (no GPS, missing other key features), and sold at a much lower price. If that's true, I have no idea, but that is what the excitment about Walmart getting the Iphone has been about. Some of the major Iphone accesory companies have started carrying Iphone nano accessories which has spurred on the rumors that an announcement will come soon.

The major excitement is that you can buy it for $197- no contract required. From what I have seen (and I could be wrong) most other places offering it at that price require a contract.

My sister's BF just bought her one outright (no contract) a month ago, and paid $399. Ouch...

Both the $197 and $297 price still require a 2 year contract.

Walmart Stores Inc. confirmed Friday that it will begin to sell the iPhone 3G on Sunday. About 2,500 of its stores will carry a black 8GB model for $197 and a 16GB iPhone in black and white for $297, with a new two-year service agreement from AT&T or qualified upgrade, Walmart said.

AT&T just started selling refurbished Iphones for $99 this week as well... also needing a 2 year contract or upgrade. Still many unconfirmed rumors out there about 4g or Nano versions to be released soon at much lower prices.
