iPhone 5

So confused as to what size memory to get: 16, 32, 64? Any suggestions? Not sure how much I or DD will need. I'm sure she'll use her phone for everything. Been thinking of purchasing a separate iPod because I don't want her killing her phone battery using it as an iPod. Help!!!!

I have a 16GB iPhone 4 and I have NO ROOM for anything now. It is as full as it can get. So I suggest you get 32GB at minimum.

Thanks! They're just so expensive. It's a little daunting to take the plunge. We've had the Thunderbolts (Droid) for almost a year and a half and we're not happy with them. So we're going to take the plunge and try iPhones.

I got the 64. The 32 would probably be enough, but it was only $100 more to double the size, so why not...

I have a ton of music on it. I just gave away my iPod last night; use the phone for everything. I am a big fan of iTunes & never use Pandora.

I typically plug my phone in to charge at bedtime and begin the day with 100 percent power. By the end of the day, I'm rarely below 30 percent. That's with a ton of email, texting, web surfing (while sitting at hockey for an hour or more), at least an hour of loud music (running), and a little talking. Plenty of battery life.

I would go with either the 32GB or 64GB but not the 16GB. If you add movies, pics, and apps it fills up quick.

We ahve 3 iphone 5's in the family. The better camera means that the pictires are bigger and take up more space. I have a ton of music (about 30gigs and it's only a fraction of my library) and listen to it all the time. Between that and apps i have a 64.

DH and DD have a 32gig and i would say DD (14) mostly has pictures but between her music, apps, and photos she has 20gig already filled up. She has no videos at this time.

So, i would say at least 32.

The minimum I would go with is 32GB since you are locked into the memory. Also, playing music that is downloaded on the iPhone is not really a battery killer.

If you're going to also be buying her an iPod because you don't want her using the iPhone as an iPod, then go with the 16gb phone. It's the apps, movies, music, and photos that take up the space.

Then again, if she's not going to be using it as an iPod, then why spend the money for an iPhone at all? It's the ability to do all those things you do on an iPod that make the iPhone...well, an iPhone. If she's not going to be using it for playing music and looking at videos and using apps, there's no point in having an iPhone, or any kind of high-end smartphone. Just get her an iPod and a flip phone.

As an aside, doing all of that 'iPod' stuff isn't going to kill the battery any more than using it as a phone would.

it depends really... i check your music library to see how many gig it is... i got a 16GB iPhone 5 with only 3GB of music... no movies, thats a huge battery killer... i also have 2 very big apps on there as well that takes up 3 GB of space, but im still left with 4GB left...

I have had the iPhone 5 for awhile with 16gb and it's really all I need. I don't keep photos on for long as it's so easy to download them to my computer, and I have about 6 or 7 apps on there right now. Out of the 16gb, I have 12 free. So I guess it depends on what you're doing with it.

I've been hearing "I told you so" for a year and a half. Of course, one of the reasons I like the Thunderbolt was it would cause her to keep her music and phone seperate. I don't want to try to reach her and find out her phone is dead because she's been using it as an iPod. I bought her a phone because I expect to be able to get in touch with her. I've heard from Apple users that the battery life in them is just as bad as the Thunderbolt. That all smartphones have horrible battery life. I guess I'm kidding myself about keeping her music seperate.

Make sure you get a good case for the phones. Just saw the Otterbox defender cases on Amazon for $17.00. Thought maybe they were for the 4s but it says they are for the 5s. Could not believe it. We have a family plan with 4 members and we kept our iPhone 4s in these cases and when we upgraded them to the iPhone 5s we were able to get $205.00 for each of our iPhone 4 64GBs (we had boxes and accesssories also). My DD (who has her own plan) did not keep hers in a good case and it cracked when she dropped it.

Same here, but I have a 4s. My DS15 also has a 16GB. If that isn't enough for him, he's welcome to dig into his own pocket and upgrade.

I really think the bad battery life is over exagerated. I admit I don't have a 5 but a 4S and believe me people were complaining about the battery as far as claming a batterygate on certain Apple sites. I listen to music all day at work, I use the maps turn by turn navigation if I have to run to a meeting that I am unsure of the location, and do some other things on my phone throughout the day including text, some emails and phone calls and I have never had to recharge through the day. Even when I go to WDW, take pics, post on Facebook etc. I can get through the day.

Have everything on one iDevice, it makes life so much simplier (says the person with an iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad ). But really my iPhone gets the most use and I received the Touch as a gift before I bought the iPhone.

Yes, smartphones have shorter battery life than non-smartphone. But I think you're worrying too much. I use the heck out of my iPhone, all day long, for news, web browsing, music, e-mail, even watching videos, and I can still get about 8 hours out of it. But you know what? Even if I don't do all that, I still get about 8-9 hours out of it, just keeping it on standby.

The key thing is, she's going to need to remember to keep it charged. Did she do that with the Thunderbolt? Then she's going to be OK with the iPhone. Yes, there may be some times where she forgets to charge it and it dies, but honestly, that could happen with any phone.
