iPhone 4G shattered glass back

So I have had my iPhone 4G for a week and I have been waiting for my Otterbox case to arrive via mail since they were on backorder. I love my phone and have been very careful with it. Last night it slipped off my lap and barely hit then ground. I picked it up and the entire back is shattered. It still works fine. I am wodered what I can do? There is no insurance and I do have an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple store on Thursday. Has anyone else dealt with this yet and what was the solution?
 
Are you talking about the screen?? Insurance doesnt' cover it breaking via an accident even if you did have it. Believe me...been there done that. $199 later, my screen is fixed.

I have to say my experience w/genius bar has been great, I have been there twice, first for screen and 2nd yesterday. my phone was going to black screen, freezing up, etc etc. they fixed it for me :) all better now.
 
same thing happend to me. took my phone back to apple told them if i had the case that wouldn't of happened. gave me a new phone on the spot
 

I feel for you - we've been waiting for our cases as well after getting the phones on the 1st day (the cases are finally supposed to be here early next week). I dropped my phone as well but luckily just took a teeny nick out of the edge of the back glass. I was so mad at myself. Maybe the "if I had had a case" approach will work for you at the Apple Store as well.
 
Are all cases on backorder? I just ordered the iphone 4 and am not expecting it for 3 weeks. I know that apple is offer a free bumper, but i wanted to get a case that would cover the whole phone, sides and back. I guess I should make sure I have one before the phone actually gets here.
 
If you paid for it with a credit card, your buyer protection should cover it if it has only been a week.
 
I would go with the "if I had a case" approach. I say this because even if you wanted to purchase one (instead of the free bumper they are giving away) they couldn't even offer to sell you one. They don't have ANY! Not one iPhone 4 case in the entire store. I think this is bad business for them.

OP, I'm sorry to hear about your phone breaking. I know how bad that is.

Most of the bigger / better case manufacturers did not have any cases available until very recently. Apparently Apple wouldn't share the specs with them early enough to get their manufacturing lines re-tooled and able to produce the new cases. Some have come out more recently, but the company we are loyal to is only going to start shipping theirs on Friday.

Even the free case program from Apple (due to the antenna issue) said cases would be available in 3-4 weeks when we ordered those- I had hoped to use one of those as a stopgap, but they're not shipping yet either.
 
DH chose a bumper as his free cover. it shipped and arrived about a week after he ordered it.

I don't know about the do-it-yourself stuff - or at least I'd say it's not as easy as it sounds always. We tried to replace a battery in an iPod Mini a few years ago - ordered the kit, followed the directions (and my DH is usually very good at that kind of thing) - no go, we just ended up trashing the whole iPod. If you have nothing to lose, then I think it's okay to try to do it yourself.
 
my son dropped his and the glass broke in a straight line across. He went to the Apple store with to see what they could do. He also used the "if I had the bumper already". They did agree to reduce the cost of replace from $199 to $150.
 
I am OP and I took it to Apple yesterday. I explained what happened and that I was very upset with myself. He took it in the back and 10 minutes later came out with a brand new back on it and told me to be careful with it! I am so thrilled and can't thank them enough.

That is so fantastic! I'm really glad that worked out for you. Guess you will be a repeat Apple customer!

That's awesome that they took care of that for you.

In the future you may want to consider a warranty. Squaretrade is offering them for $99 for 2 years and it covers accidents (after a $50 deductable).

Glad to hear it worked out for you! Apple tends to be really good about backing their products and earning loyal customers. Just one of the reasons I have my Macbook, LOL.
