IPhone 4 locked to Verizon?

I have a Tracfone, and don't know a lot about cell phone plans. My husband got an Iphone 4 from Verizon from his company in October. The company was bought out, and everyone in his department is being let go. The new company doesn't want the phones back as they don't provide phones to employees.

Anyway, as far as I can tell, he won't be able to use this phone on any prepaid contract, even one from Verizon. Is that correct? (Trying to figure out what use it has, since it has no SIM card slot and can't even be unlocked to use overseas.)

Is the phone in your husband's name or company? Be sure it's in your husband's name.

The best bet may be to sell it.

he can continue to use it with Verizon with an appropriate plan (pre paid or not)
He may also be able to call Verizon and have them unlock it so he can use it with any other company with the same cell protocol (gsm or cdma).

There is a possibility it can be used on PagePlus...I have heard some success stories of people being able to use Verizon iPhones with them.

If it does work, it would be cheaper than Verizon, and it is prepaid. They use the Verizon network too.

Absinthe 2.0 just came out and works great to jailbreak/unlock your iphone so it will work on just about any network.

He can continue using it as an iPod as long as he has wireless enabled.

Thanks. We were wondering about that! That might come in handy.

I don't know whose name the phone it is in. The original company bought the phones, and used to take them back if you left, but the "new" company doesn't want it back. DH is one of the last to leave, and it was made very clear.

Thanks for all the responses! I read a little about "jailbreaking", so will also look into that, SenecaWolf. My research says Verizon won't let you use it on their own prepaid plan. Supposedly, all Iphones are banned from that.
