Had otterbox cases for our 3GS and loved them. Bought a Commuter and a Defender when DH and I upgraded to 4 and both are already in bad shape. Looked into life proof case but reviews don't seem to be that good. We are both OK with a bulky case if it offers protection.

HUGE fans of Life Proof cases here.

Online they have loads of colors, too. Just got DD a new one, bright green. Her old one is fine, she just loves green, and we did not see that color a year ago when we got the white one.

I have the purple.

We bought 2 Life Proof cases about a year ago. Love them. One phone was dunked in water and survived. The other phone has been dropped onto a tile floor twice. The phone was fine both times. The second fall damaged the case slightly. I called Life Proof and they replaced the case for free, immediately.
It takes effort to put them on correctly, but if you do it right you should only need to do it once. Follow the video instructions on the website.

Since you don't mind bulk maybe you can find something better/cheaper than Life Proof, but DH didn't want bulk so we didn't really look at the bulkier cases.

3 iPhones, 2 iTouch = 5 lifeproof cases and couldn't be happier.

My 14yo's iPhone has been dropped repeatedly, accidentally closed in the hatch of the van, taken in the shower, dropped in the river, run over by a friends bike (after it dropped out of her pocket) and while it's a bit scuffed around the edges, it still looks good and her phone is great. She's had this one about 7 or 8 months. Had an Otterbox defender before that - hated it, it was always coming apart (the rubber gasket would peel back)

My husband and I have each had our Lifeproof cases for a little over a year. Mine is a bit scuffed in one corner from a drop on the concrete and on his the little tab for the sound is highly worn and the top corner right there feels loose - he says it catches on the belt clip there sometimes. Or maybe it's the way he grabs it.

Anyways, we're all very pleased with it and after our experience with my daughters Otterbox, I (personally) wouldn't but another one.

As a comparison, my daughters best friend also has a Lifeproof and prefers the small silicone "cases". She's no where near as drop prone as my daughter though. This friend also hates the hassle of taking the phone out of the case, which she's had to do a few times at the apple store for some issue with her phone.
