I have the opportunity to purchase (from a friend who is getting a new one) a used iPad3, 32gb, cellular for $350. I admit that I am iPad stupid.

This seems like a decent deal since Walmart is currently selling them new for $629, but I know that the new iPads are coming out soon. Will the new release lower the prices of the older models significantly? Is there a monthly fee for the "cellular" part of the iPad? And while I'm asking dumb questions - what does the "cellular" part even do? Does it just replace the wifi like in a Kindle or can it actually be used for calls/texts/etc?

Thank you so much for being patient and helping me! :worship:

That's a great price if it's in good shape. And no, new ipads coming out will not reduce the prices on previous models significantly.

You are correct on the cellular part...when you don't have WiFi available, the data it uses (surfing the web, watching Netflix, etc...) works on cellular networks. There is a fee for this, but it's on a month-2-month basis and does not require a contract. You will be limited to the service provider that this specific Ipad was originally set up with (AT&T, SPRINT or VERIZON). It cannot be used for traditional phone calls but you can Facetime (video phone calls) and you can get apps for texting.

Just for price comparison, Apple says a refurbed 3rd generation,32gb with cellular for $499. The current generation refurbed with the same specs is $609.
So as long as you are happy with a 3rd generation, it's a great deal! Actually it's a great price no matter how you look at it.

Hey, I'm still using a 1st gen iPad, so having an older one isn't a total no-go. And you are getting a good price from your friend. Go for it.

Will you actually use the cellular (knowing you have to pay more for it)? If not, I'd be way more tempted to get a 4th generation refurbished from Apple. Apple has a tendency to quickly stop supporting old devices. For example, the 4th generation iPod Touch they're still selling isn't compatible with the newest operating system which means as apps update and new ones are developed, it will become harder and harder to download new content.
