An iPad mini 2 is perfect for a child; it is not too small. My grandson (9 1/2) used to have my old iPad Air and when it finally wore out, I got him an iPad mini 2 for $99 when I got a new iPhone from AT& T. He loves it; it's very light and easy for him to carry. The iPad is far more versatile than a Kindle Fire or Android tablet with many more kid friendly available apps.
