Don't know where to ask this!!
Since getting an iPad do you still use your laptop? My laptop is dying and I can't decide if I need another laptop or an iPad ?? I use my iPhone for tons of stuff. Grandson has iPad so I am familiar with them. Any thoughts?

We have a joint Apple desk top and I have a Mac lap top and my husband has the iPad. Rarely does he use our desk top now that he has the iPad. I use my lap top all the time but that's because I don't have the iPad. I say go for the iPad.

If you have a desktop to go to when you need more, then I say go for the iPad. If it will be your main source of relaying information then you might want the laptop.

+1 I totally agree.
I love my iPad when I am in the travel mode. It doesn't add much weight or bulk to my luggage. It has mapping tools to help me find my way. But, there is a lot of functionality that is very basic or nonexistent. For example, I use ancestry.com a lot. The AP is very basic and doesn't work as well (for me) as the full version. I've found this to be true for other web sites i frequent. Also, there is no flash player (some web sites only have flash). There is no interface for scanning documents in.
You can back up some things to the cloud with the iPad, but not everything, so you would still need to sync up to a computer.

I agree with this also. I LOVE my ipad and I use it ALL the time! I just bought a new one actually. But, my desktop computer is still used for several things, that do not work well on the ipad.

We have 2 iPads in my house and this is my opinion.

The Ipad is GREAT for "entertainment".

If you're looking for something to listen to music, surf the web, watch video, etc... get the Ipad.

The Laptop/Desktop is GREAT for productivity.

If you do a lot of work with documents and spreadsheets and "poductivity" type applications, I would go with the laptop.

While the iPad has functionality to allow for using a lot of productivity type apps, I just feel the design doesn't lend itself well to using them. Feels to me a bit..."off" I guess you'd say.

One of the biggest constraints with an Ipad or any other tablet is data storage. Of course you could store on the cloud but then you would have a different constraint of accessing the cloud, connection speed, etc. If you have money to burn, it is a "nice to have", but not a replacement for a notebook.

I can tell you for us, it just depends. My DW uses her ipad all the time. She uses it in her classroom and never leaves home without it. My DD is also more likely to pick up the ipad. She uses it for school and for playing games. If you asked my son what he prefers, he would tell you his laptop. He uses it for assignments for school and once in a blue moon to play a game. Because he takes college classes in high school, the ipad just doesn't do it for him. If he wants quick access to information, he'd grab the ipad. Myself, I can go either way. If it's work related, I only use the laptop. If it's for entertainment, then the ipad. Good luck deciding what you want.

If all you need to do is email and social stuff the iPad is fine. But anymore get another laptop. Sign up for the sale emails from Newegg.com They regularly have bottom end laptops for $300. Will do much more then a pad but not for heavy duty stuff. If you can get them on sale you may be able to swing both the laptop and pad.

Brilliantly summarized.

I am in school for my BSN so I do use my Macbook still. Just easier to type papers that way, IMO. My pictures get put on the Macbook too.

My ipad is used more for movies, games, web browsing. I have used it in a pinch for documents though-you get get keyboards for them. I can also get Blackboard access on it.

When my desktop died, I didn't replace it. My laptop will take over that function.
