The kiddos got ipads for xmas and we are going to disney in February. What is the easiest cheapest way to load a few movies on them? They are wifi only...not 4g so no streaming netflix unless we are somewhere with free wifi.

I was hoping to download a few things for them at home before we leave...they like different types of movies for the most part.

any ideas?

We don't have iPads but all have iPhones. We just add videos from our iTunes account. A lot of movies anymore come with a code for a digital copy, so we have quite a collection to choose from.

Wouldn't the movies sync via itunes? So you need the movies on your home computer.

Also, keep in mind, there will be a time (from when they shut the aircraft doors until you get above 10K feet and from 10K feet until they open the door) when anything electronic needs to be OFF. Your kids will need to have something else to entertain them during this time frame. Depending on how busy the airport is, it could be 15 minutes, it could be 45 minutesor longer. You may already know this, but some don't.

You can download directly to your ipads when you are in a wifi zone. I have found that it is a bit cheaper, and much faster, to download episodes of tv shows for my kids to watch. They like it a bit more as well since they can move from show to show as their attention spans wane. So we have lots of episodes of Arthur, Wizards, Suite Life, ANT Farm, etc.

I think if you search google you could find a free program that will convert your video files to play on the iPad. If you don't already have videos on your computer then I guess you could do something like bit torrent to download for free but then you dont really know what you are downloading. I would just go off of iTunes.

Can you do Netflix streaming or is that not an option? I think that would be the cheapest easiest way to watch videos.

Yes, I do realize the wait ( i do appreciate the "heads up" though because you are right some people don't realize it)...it's not just the actual plane ride but the waiting time in the airport that can be a killer! Don't
worry we won't pull an Alec Baldwin...LOL

my husband and I have had an ipod for years (kids crack on it because it is soo big!) but never did anything but music on it.

Oh! I should add the kiddos are 10 and 12 so they aren't so little anymore that they NEED it....I just want them to be entertained so I can relax! LOL

Just looked on itunes and movies were 14.99...ouch that can be expensive...they can play the apps that are on it for that much! I was hoping for something less expensive.

When looking at movies, the SD version is a little cheaper. You can also rent most movies on iTunes.

I prefer to rent a itunes movie(s) ... a few of the older movies are 99cents
while most newer movies are $3.99 ... IIRC
TV show episodes are less costly too.

The 24 hours (to watch) does not start until first viewing
(within 30 days of purchase) of rental.

I rent because very few movies ... I would care to watch more than once. And $14.99 is not cheap (budgetwise) to me. My limit was $10.00 ... but that is so yesterday's news.

Then again once you buy a movie it is yours to watch again in the future.
:happytv:

I also just rent the movies from i-tunes. Very inexpensive @ under $5 per movie.
They do expire after 30 days and you have to watch the movie within 24 hrs of when you started it, but I don't mind those restrictions for the cheap price.

If you have bought any movies with Digital downloads than you can add those through Itunes. This is what we have done with the Ipod touches.

Oooo! that sounds good! they are passed the age where they watch a movie again and again! thank you!

I don't mean to sound clueless, but I am! How exactly do you do this on itunes? I have found itunes to be frustrating at times. Thanks!

Google the program HandBrake and then download it. It will convert your movies to a file that iTunes can read. The program puts the on your iTunes account which you can then access on the iPad. We put all the movies on a back-up hard drive since it saves space on our main hard drive. My husband travels a lot and this is how he manages his movies so he can take about 14 with him (he has the 32 GB iPad).

DVD Shrink is a free program that will create back-up electronic copies of DVD's. You can then use a program like Handbrake to convert them to watch on Ipad's (or Iphones, Ipods, etc...).

A word of caution about renting....you can only watch it once, so if you have two kids, only one will be able to watch it before it disappears.

We buy combo pack movies that we really like. That way, we have a DVD copy and a digital copy to put on our iTunes account.

You can find combo pack movies on Amazon or at any retailer. Just make sure it says "digital copy included" on it.

Thank you for that tip. THat is very important! My children often like to watch the same movies, and multiple times. Hmmm....something to think about. Don't forgot those headphones too! ;)

I thought you could only watch it for 24 hours (but as many times as you want in a 24 hour period)?

OP-- Just go with television episodes that your kids like...it's pretty cheap (.99-1.29 for most episodes)....

I got an HP Touchpad for Christmas. I just put 2 movies on it from my home collection. I used the free program FreeMake Video Converter to convert my DVD to a digital file. Then I transferred it to the Touchpad via the USB cord.

I'm not sure what file types the iPad will read, but I am sure there is a similar program that you can use to do the same thing.

This. Handbrake is an awesome program. Google it and look for instructions and you should be able to convert most movies and add them.

Stop the presses! That is what I gave my DH and DD. You just googled the FEEMAke Video Converter? Then, do you put the DVD in the drive and download then upload to the touchpad? SOrry...no clue how to do this.
