I'm thinking of getting DH an ipad for Father's Day. Our iphones are 16g and we always have to delete photos, apps, etc when we have an ios update. So I was concerned a 16g ipad wouldn't be enough. But the 32g and up is getting pretty pricey for what he would use it for. I'm also looking at other tablets that have expandable memory with an sd card. So, my question is what memory capacity is good enough on a tablet that will be used for browsing, pics and maybe music and a few books & movies?

I have a 16gb ipad air. I also have a 16gb iphone, which is only half full.

If he isn't going to put any music on it, 16gb is more than enough space.

16 should be plenty if he utilizes the cloud or uploads pics periodically somewhere.

Once you start talking about movies on a iPad, you need to consider the larger sizes. Movies can be huge unless they're on a service like flitter or vudu. But then you'll need internet access to watch them.

Personally, I have a 64gb iPhone with all my music, and a 16gb iPad with a few apps and 4G data.

You should go for at least 32 GB. I have a 64 GB iPad Air and I have never come close to running out of storage space.

I'd definitely pay for the extra space! I have the same issue with my iPhone and the kids iPad minis, always running out of space. So now looking for a regular iPad, and probably at least the 64.

For my family's istuff (also works with android and can back up regular computer) I have corsair voyager air 1 terabyte streams to several devices at once even in the car but requires certain files.

I have a 16 gb iPad mini. I had put a few movies and tv shows and have filled it up a few times now. I just bought Sandisk wireless flash drive. It hooks up tp the ipad through the wifi. I saved all my movies and tv shows on it. It stays charged for 4 hours so it is perfect for car rides and such. I was also able to move my photos from my ipad to the flash drive. So I can make room on the ipad to take more photo or videos. Best Buy sells a 32 gb for 59.99 and 64 for 99.00. You can use it with both the iphone and the ipad at the same. It has good reviews on the best buy website so go check it out.

It's one of those things where somebody should buy as much space as they can afford. 16gb is a bit small, especially when you start trying to store movies. I have a 16gb Mini, and I am always keeping one eye on how much space I have left.

I look at my iPad mini as my entertainment device so I say at least 32GBs. Target had $50 gift cards with purchase right before Mother's Day and Best Buy has $50 off almost every other week it seems. I would think around Father's Day they will both have these sales. If you can get Target to price match Best Buy (your mileage may vary) there would be no reason not to get more space. A couple months ago Target had a Cartwheel deal + gift card deal and Best Buy also had a sale. Target let me price match and I walked out of there with an iPad Air for less than I paid for my Mini. So keep your eyes peeled and watch for sales.

That looks like a great gadget! I definitely need to invest in one of those.

Thanks for the info. I do love a bargain!:thumbsup2

Momonthego. That sounds great!

I have the 16 and when I watch movies it fills up. I don't have any music on it now because it kept saying it was full. Annoying! But I learned what I needed to do to make space. Delete, Delete, Delete!

So if you like your pics, movies, apps and other things I would recommend getting the larger memory.

How does it work in the car if it needs wifi?

If it works like the wifi hard drive I have, it creates its own local wireless network - no internet connection, just a connection between the iPad and the device.

I've had the issue of deleting during an update for room to do the update. The new update doesn't take the memory up. If there was anything I missed and wanted back I just went into the APs and reloaded it after the update. I have a 16 phone, and ipad, no problems, never deleted photos.

When I bought dh his ipad last Fathers Day I purchased a refurbished off the website and it was like new. I never had a problem.

I have 64 g and take tons of photos and still have more space than I will ever use. If you can afford it I would get 64 if not no less than 32.

We have the 16g iPhones and ran out of space quickly. I have to backup and delete my pictures often. I got a 16g iPad air for Christmas and was out of space in a month. If I could go back in time, I'd definitely increase storage!!

My DH and I just went to NY. I told him about the Sandisk and he purchased it for me!

It is a really handy device. The only problem we had was the fact that I loaded my movies from iTunes then my DH couldn't access them from his iPad mini!

We homeshare so it didn't make sense to me.

It was great in the fact that each day after taking pics all day long I was able to load all of the pics on that night!

So I may have just talked you all out of buying it. I'm not sure what actual movies you can download and 8 people can watch since most of my movies were from iTunes and he couldn't view them.

Is his iPad Mini authorized on the same Apple ID account you used to purchase the movies? You can see your authorized devices on the account screen in the iTunes store under "Manage Devices." He can also check what account his iPad Mini is signed in with in the Settings under iTunes & App Store.

Last time I checked (it has been a while now though), you could use Home Sharing with one shared Apple ID and still be logged into a different personal Apple ID for the stores, so I think that might possibly be the hiccup you encountered.
