Due to the fact that I am a technical moron, I could use some insight on an Ipad purchase for dh.:)

I am thinking about getting one for Christmas because it is something he would never buy for himself, but I know he thinks they are cool. We already have a laptop and netbook, so it wouldn't have to be for work. However, would this be overkill?

Also, since it is for entertainment, what size would be good to get and would the 3G be beneficial? He would use it at home, when we visit family and on vacation.

Lastly, can I add apps to it before I give it to him or should I wait and let him set things up? I know there are some apps he thinks are cool, so I was thinking I would have it all set for him.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!:goodvibes

Seriously, what I would do is go to your APPLE Store and have an Appple tech show you each one of the 3 Ipads. ::yes::

We did that. I knew nothing about Ipads (this was in June).
DH said he thought we would love to have one. Ok. So off we go to Apple. The techs there are awesome. The tech spent close to an hour showing us the 3 different Ipads, all their features and accessories. We actually said "thanks" and left. We went to Panera next store, had lunch, talked it over and went back. Looked for our tech and told him we wanted to purchase one. :woohoo:

WE LOVE IT. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

As far as the apps go, I would let DH explore all the apps and let him pick and choose which ones he wants. :thumbsup2

There aren't any feature differences other than 3G/wifi or wifi only, and 8, 32, or 64GB, right?

Oh gosh, Liz, I couldn't answer that and DH is not here (at the dentist) or I would ask him.
I am looking at my receipt and I have the 32G Wifi ... which I have no clue what that means either.

Sorry.

Thanks for the help!:flower3:

I haven't found different features for the Ipad, just difference in size and 3G. Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't any.

lol, that's OK! I was just curious if there were any differences the guy at the Apple store pointed out to you, other than the wireless and the capacity.

OP, I love my iPad for the Zinio app. I have subscribed to most of my favorite magazines in digital format now, using that app. There are also stand alone apps for People and Vanity Fair that I use, and The New Yorker has one as well (although I won't use it until they come down on their pricing for digital versions - I am NOT paying $4.99 per issue for a weekly magazine, especially when I take the paper version for $40 bucks per year!)

But I LOVE having my magazines digitally - I can keep them as long as I want and no paper clutter in my house!! There are a few I still have in paper format so I'll have something to read in the tub, but most of them are on the iPad. The price was worth it for that alone.

I also read sometimes using my Kindle app although I MUCH prefer the Kindle for pleasure reading - I find the iPad too heavy. Changing the background color to sepia has helped my eyesight with not as much eye fatiguie, but the Kindle is still my go-to book reader.

I have all my photos - over 6000 - on my iPad. I love the apps for CNN, USA Today, and NPR - always something new and quick to read. I like having FaceBook on it, and my email and internet access. I have all of my Audible.com audio books on the iPad so I can listen to a book if I want. Usually I use my iPhone for that but they are on my iPad as well.

I have one movie but haven't gotten into much TV watching. I have the apps, though.

Tetris, of course - can't live without it!! Lots of specialty apps for crafts and hobbies I'm interested in.

I love the iPad!

When I bought mine I went ahead and got the 64GB and the 3G. I didn't know how much I would use it and for what purposes. I have about 37GB free now and I have all my photos, all my music, one movie, 20 audiobooks, and several more apps. Also about 8 or 9 magazine subscriptions with back issues since June or July.

I always think more is better if it's in the budget but of course next year there will be a new one that blows the socks off these models. Just the nature of electronics today.

This is good info, thanks! I think I'm going with the 3G after learning more about it. I just had no idea how much information each would hold.
