Invalid security certificate???

I just went to log onto my company's website, My patient list is on there, other information regarding my patients I also communicate with co-workers via email thru the site.
anyway, a box popped up saying the security was invalid did I want to proceed? so I was going to but then another message came up saying it could be someone impersonating the site??
I was on the site earlier today to email someone and it was fine, this message did not come up.
what does it mean, anyone know?
If it is still there in the morning, I will call the tech person in the office, but was just curious if anyone has ever seen this before?

Yeah, lots. It happens a lot with smaller companies who "forget" to recertify -- especially recently when IT departments are trying to save money.

It could be a lot of things. There should have been a link to the technical information that would have told you what the problem was. Certificates are far too complicated to give a full description of how they work here but it is most likely expired, has a broken chain of trust, or is not correctly signed.

can you post the website here? I can tell you what the problem is. I'm an I.T guy

If you can't post it than there are a couple options

1. Make sure you are typing https://websitename. Don't click on a link you may or may not have received in an email

2. The certificate may have expired which means that they did not renew.

3. It could be malicious.

It appears they fixed it or renewed it or whatever they needed to do. I went on this morning and it was fine, no messages.
