I think I have posted this link a half dozen or more times over the years here on the DIS, and I still think it is one of the best explanations of Internet trolls, PITA they are, but they are part of the Net landscape, not unlike viruses and spyware. Like those malwares, if you can filter them out, in the case of a troll, ignore them (the best recommended solution), they eventually crawl back into their holes and disappear, most likely traveling on to some other hapless website to try and foment arguing while that watch and smile from a safe distance, separated by a screen and modem. We've had them before on the DIS, and they have either got the boot out the door or left on their own, either way is fine. Advice, ignore a troll, don't feed a troll.

I have to agree Dan although sometimes my perverse side comes out and I can't help but respond, although I mostly like watching the sparks fly.:)

I wonder what trolls did to annoy people before the internet.

Probably just stayed in their parent's basement and tried to imagine what it would be like to have a girlfriend.

I think they are the idiots that drive on the roads!

There must be A LOT of people that still aren't internet trolling...

Thanks, Dan! It answers so many of my questions! :teeth:

Good post Dan, their intention is to ruin websites, newsgroups and any chat rooms they can get into....

Good news on Marie, I am so glad it hear it....:sunny:

Thanx Dan ~ It is the first time I have seen this. IMHO it is always best to ignore these people.

Thought it was worth a bump! I missed the thread, I am guessing your wife is okay?

Thanks, Microcell. I tried to send you a PM earlier, but your PM box was full, yes, she is, thankyou.

Bumping this up. Looks like we need to keep it on the first page for a while.

Thanks Dan!!

What's a Troll? Is that someone who is being a jerk or someone who just does not see things the way you see them?

A Troll is not someone who posts discussion starting debates, etc. A Troll is someone who posts something inflamatory that he knows is going to stir not discussion, but emotional outcry and then the troll proceeds to post nasty, mean things directed more at the poster than the discussion.

Trolls do this to try and destroy message boards by dividing people, and usually it does not work.

"An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing ******* on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words."

Follow the link that Dan posted on the first page. Very good info.

According to the linked page............

What is a Troll?

And, as I had said in my OP, I have found these troll thoughts in the article to be quite accurate over the years, always seem to fit the trolls we have had crawl in here over the years. And the trolls do continue to foment until they are either ignored or booted off he site (that's the best solution, IMO)

And welcome to the DIS, tlc.
