Internet personas

Just because I dated Brad Pitt and I am a decorated fighter pilot that has quadruplets named Marlene, Carlene, Darlene, and Bob doesn't make me a liar.

I don't believe you're decorated....

LOL...ITA
Can't keep track of my life as it is 1/2 the time. don't have time to be keeping track of lies too

You just nailed the answer to some of the earlier questions of "how do you know?"

Well, because the person can't keep the stories straight! I work with someone like that. And actually, she's a family friend as is her sister. So at times we can compare notes and find out what the work version is vs. the friend version vs. the family version.

Why care? Well, in real life we try to find the humor in it otherwise we'd go absolutely crazy and lash out at her. On the Internet, it's easier to just try and ignore that person. . . but some people just seem to pop up everywhere, making it very difficult to avoid. I've ended up finding myself not going to other boards I used to frequent because I couldn't get away from the drama and one-uppers. There are times that I do appreciate the people who remember details and pay at least a little bit of attention. I've come across a few threads here over the years, and I know you all have as well, that turn into train wrecks. Sometimes it is just people picking on each other. I'm not trying to rationalize every fight. Other times people are jumping in to point out inconsistencies to caution all the people buying the story and/or being taken advantage of by someone with a sad story.

My screen name is my real name. Any stories I post on here are the truth. My girlfriend called me up after I had a heart attack and she said that someone she knows, but doesn't know me personally, called her up and said, Your friend Corryn had a heart attack? GF said, Yeah, how do YOU know that? She said, I read it on the DIS :rotfl:
I've really got nothing to hide, and that's me in real life, too. Sometimes being so transparent and honest isn't a good thing, though :rolleyes1

My SIL has a myspace page and it is Way Out There! She's a regular Goth Queen

what's weird though, is why people feel the need to lie on the net, I mean really....especially when it's in writing, it's out there and available!

Why do people come off as something they aren't. You know the type. Been there done that on everything. Making them the center of attention and build themselves up?

I frequent many message boards (yes, I have no life) and it just astounds me. Some are just so more obvious than others and it seems each post gets further and further out there.

Please don't misunderstand me, I am not referring to anyone directly. Its just something I've been seeing more and more of all across the net.

Am I the only one that comes across this? If so maybe I need new places to frequent.

I was conversing with someone from up here for almost 2 years. Found a few 'holes" in her story over that time but dismissed it as coincidence or just unrelated but it all came unraveling a few weeks ago and, wow, what a web that was woven.

I just don't get it. :confused3

This is just bizarre. If the people on those boards bother her that much, why not just tell it like it is to them instead of hiding behind a different name/identity? Or sending them PM's so everyoine else can't see her complaints/criticisms? Wouldn't it bo too much work keeping up alter egos???

She likes to start fights. Sometimes, she'll have a bunch of her "imaginery friends" back her up. She just doesn't want to ruin her golden reputation, such as it is. As if being considered a psychotic nutjob is such a trophy.

Personally, I couldn't keep up with the care and management of alter egos.

I know, recently I have noticed several posters posting very different things! Kind of sad that they have to play these games.

And I thought you liked me

Does this bribe still work :teeth:

I have certainly seen it and I think their personas are fantasies of who they wish they could be (including being jerks). I have also seen people act very nice and caring and then, eventually, reveal themselves to be their true heinous selves.

As for myself, my screen name(s) are not my real name. I had an internet stalker following me for a while a few years ago and I've found it's in my best interests to have a different name on different boards. I also 'mix up' details just in case this person is still out there looking for me. The details I mix up don't affect the truth of the story, but would make it harder for my stalker to realize it's me. So sometimes it's a matter of protecting one's privacy.

the worst one for me was a girl on a ttc, baby message board, who made up her pregnancy and miscarriage and whole life pretty much.
I just don't understand some people....I mean, I can get not posted personal info, but if you do post what you do for a living, for example, why lie about it in another part of the board? Who cares?
