Internet "Package" on the Magic

I believe you're referring to the unlimited internet usage. Unlimited Access is $89.99 for the 7 day trip or you can pay per use at $.75 per minute. You get a username and password to use on the computers in the Internet Cafe in the Promenade lounge or in the Cove Cafe. Note that you can't plug your own computer in to their network.

I decided that I was on vacation and took a vacation from the internet also. But everyone that I really needed to contact was on the ship.

Does anyone know of there has been any 'talk' of going wireless on DCL?

Nothing official coming from Disney... Would be great to have..... They already have wireless connection available on the ship, they just do not allow guests to use it. I saw a CM using wireless on the Sportdeck to check-in/out kids in the club.

How much is it & what do you get?

My experience was that you get "do it yourself" use of a set of relatively slow terminals in the Internet Cafe. While there was supposed to be some support there periodically, I never saw them and the equipment was poorly maintained, considering the high use charge. By poorly maintained I mean dirty keyboards and mouse wheels, and in one case an actually missing mouse wheel.

You cannot connect your own laptop to download / upload email or pictures, so plan to have a web based connection for any email. Also, if you were thinking of doing the $0.75 / minute service, please understand that the service is very slow, just slightly better than dial-up. If you are used to a broadband or DSL connection, you need to plan that you will not have anywhere nearly that speed to get email or go to websites.

Finally, please be aware that Disney thinks the "unlimited" use charge is per person, not per stateroom, unlike most cable or DSL providers. Thus they will only allow one logon from the userid at a time. You and a spouse or child cannot be sitting at two terminals and both be logged on, unless you have paid for two accounts.

Overall, I think this is one of the poorer shipboard services. When I spoke to the guest relations manager on my last cruise I was told that this is not a "Disney" run service, but is outsourced, and therefore they do not control it. I suspect that over several years it will get better as more of the senior managers get familiar with email, the internet, but for now don't set your expectations very high.

I do have to say that I disagree. I was on last year (and maybe it's gotten worse) and had to make a reservation for a convention I was going to because the registration date was while we were on the cruise. I have dial-up at home and it was much faster than at home and in most cases much faster than at work (and we don't have dial-up at work obviously). I was pleasantly pleased with the service and my husband also had to checkin at work often. We definitely got our money's worth out of it as we sat down and figured how much we used and how much it would have cost if we did it per minute and we had our deal paid for on the first day of use. I was very pleased to even have this service onboard and it worked great for us.

I do agree that if you have kids or teens that are online a lot and expect to be able to be online during the cruise and you want to get online, you can't unless you buy an account for each person. But we were on the ship to have fun and spend our time online unless we needed to. Rarely was there a time when the computers were all taken and we usually got on each day.

The privacy is a bit to be desired but it was fine. I was happy to have it available and will be happy to have it available this year when we are cruising without my daughter and will use it to keep in touch with home.

And just an FYI - it does cost $.25 a page for printing something. Which isn't bad if you really need to print something.
