We're staying in a studio on points (split stay BLT and BCV) and have also used our points to reserve a studio for my sister and her kids. I know that we're entitled to free internet, but will they be charged the $9.95 per 24 hours for internet access?

Possible but doubtful. If you put yourself, or someone else listed on the contract, in their villa, it is a moot point and you will not be charged or could get it removed.

I'm confused. I thought the rule was any room booked with points=free internet. I mean, those points paid for internet access already since it's not actually free at all and is included in our dues. What gives?

Everywhere I've seen it referenced, it was "DVC members staying on points get free internet". Guests have often gotten free internet also, but I don't think the wording of the perk allows it technically. Even exchange rooms and many rooms given to CRO are reserved with points.

Thanks for the input. On the 1st part of our stay (BLT) our guests were not charged even though nobody on the contract was in their room. At BCV we listed one of the adults in our party as staying in their room (which wasn't a big lie, we did spend a fair amount of time in each others' rooms including using each others' laptops) and once again weren't charged.

We had 2 studios at AKV, one for me, DH and the kids, and one for my parents. My parents were not charged for their internet access and I know they used it. My dad had his laptop out and router set up within about 5 minutes:lmao:. They are not members and neither me nor DH was on their reservation.

OK, I have a little more info. I read through the log in legalese and technically and it seems contractually it says it's free for DVC members with no qualifying info. I know this isn't their intent though.

The POS does state that guests of members qualify for some perks so maybe it's falling under that? If a member were to notify MS when they rent out points perhaps the renters would be charged but I don't recall any posts of that scenario.

Next summer, 2012, this will be the first time as DVC members that I must access my e mail. I plan to do it via laptop or blackberry..

Here is my question:
If I plan to bring laptop, can I simply use the ethernet cord provided and I will get internet? I have read on the boards, however, that the internet service provided that way is very slow!:confused: Is this true?

If I plant to leave laptop home and use blackberry, must I purchase an Airport Express Router to enable wireless internet use? Also, if I plan to use laptop in a wireless environment and skip the slow internet service provided by ethernet cord, do I simply purchase an Airport Express Router, run the software at home on either a laptop or desktop, then bring the Router to any DVC Villa and I can use my laptop faster or my Blackberry?

MUCH THANKS IN ADVANCE OF ME THINKING ABOUT "NEXT SUMMER" ALREADY!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR SORTING THROUGH THE DETAILS OF INTERNET USEAGE AND WIRELESS USEAGE FOR DVC MEMBERS!:cool1:

The internet service isn't top speed but for simple email you probably won't notice anything. It'll be people looking to upload pictures or stream video that will have problems. Internet browsing will also be slower but who wants to do much of that while at WDW? :confused3

Using a wireless router also won't do anything to increase the speed. The router will be connecting thru the same hard wired internet just the same as if you hooked your laptop up direct.

If you want to use the wifi on your Blackberry then yes, you'll either need a wireless router, to locate some of the elusive wifi spots around various resorts (and I don't know where those are), or to access thru your Blackberry's data plan.

The Airport Express is one type of router but there are others that are less expensive if you decide you want or need wireless access.

Stayed at AKL Jambo House from 8/24 to 8/30 on rented points. Was not charged for internet usage. Hope that helps.
