Anyone have experience with getting a dial-up access number for the WDW area? Thankfully my DSL plan is bundled with free nationwide dial-up service. Having walked through the application, I'm presented with quite a few access numbers in the 407 area code. The most likely candidates appear to be:

Reedy Creek 407-477-XXXX
W. Kissimmee 407-966-XXXX
Orlando 407-377-2404
Orlando 407-641-4774

Any advice is appreciated.

Also, after I've placed a call, is there anywhere I can look to confirm immediately whether the call was a local or toll call? Can a call to the front desk get me a quick answer?

Thanks!

It's not the area code that determines long distance numbers, but rather what exchange you're calling from and what exchange you're calling to. Looks like you've got a choice of 4 different exchanges: 477, 966, 377, and 641. Don't know where you're staying, but even within WDW different locations may be in different exchanges.

When you get here, look in the front of the phone book. Find the section for the exchange you're in. (You can get that from the resort's phone number). The phone book will have a chart showing what other exchanges you can call from that number that would be considered local.

Note you can't go by location. There are numbers in Kissimmee that are long distance numbers from WDW, while there are numbers in Orlando physically located much farther away, but are local numbers.

Hope this helps.

Bill's suggestions are correct, as usual. Look up the numbers in the front of the phone book- there is a list giving all of the local prefixes.

I'm POSITIVE that the Reedy Creek number will be local - I doubt the Kissimmee number is local and the Orlando numbers are probably OK. There are also some numbers in the 321 area code that are also local (just to confuse the issue a bit).

If you want to test a number, dial it and then call the desk to see if it was charged as local or long distance (they'll give you a printout of your room charges whenever you want too).

To start with, just use the Reedy Creek number and you'll be fine.

Enjoy!

Seconding the motion on the Reedy Creek number here. Remember, the Reedy Crrek fire station is right there in between CBR and BW. So I'd guess that Reedy Creek would be most likely to be a local call.

This used to be the way to go, but lately - with all the different phone books being published - you can't count on this list being in the phone book. [It wasn't in the Metro Detroit phone book - I know, I worked for a CLEC (local telco) and we had to check with the state of Mich tariffs for the NPA NXX info. Just checked - not in the Greater Phoenix area YP either.] It might be, but I'd pursue other alternative sources, just in case it isn't.

Dr Tom gives good advice in that you may not find it everywhere. We just went off-site and won't be back on-site (VWL) until Sunday so I don't have a WDW phone book handy.

However, here at the Hilton GVC (located behind the Premium Outlets mall, and across the street from the new Publix), I looked up the numbers for the WDW resorts and they are in exchanges such as 824, 827, 934, 939 and such. These are all listed as Lake Buena Vista numbers.

The local/long distance chart shows that from Lake Buena Vista you can call the following calling areas as being local: Apopka, Celebration, Clermont, East Orange, Montverde, Orlando, Reedy Creek, Windermere, Winter Garden, Winter Park.

Note that Kissimmee is NOT listed.

It appears your Reedy Creek number should be good and probably both of your Orlando numbers as the book definitely shows 377 and 641 are definitely in the Orlando exchange. 477 is definitely listed as being Reedy Creek.

Your 966 number is definitely long distance but only extended calling with a flat rate of 25 cents per call.

Note: All this comes from the Hilton's phone book (Sprint). WDW may be different. I'll check it next week now that you've got me curious.

That may be great advice for those staying in Detroit and Phoenix, but the local number information is definitely available in the phone books in the WDW resorts. I'm at OKW right now and page 11 of the room phone book is titled "Lake Buena Vista Local Calling Area". It lists all of the area 407 local number prefixes for WDW phones (560,824,827,828,842,934,938 and 939) and the area 321 local prefixes (395). There are several boxes (too numerous to list) of other locales that are also local calls from the above prefixes. West Kissimmee calls are NOT local, but there are many in Orlando, Reedy Creek, Celebration, Clermont, WinterPark and several others that are all local calls from OKW.

Just look in the front of the WDW room phone book if you have any questions about your ISP local calls. (I'd still suggest using Reedy Creek as 477 is listed along with the two Orlando prefixes you posted - 377 and 641 ).

Staying at OKW last month I used a reedy creek number and it was .15 a call

Thanks for posting that info, Doc. I know it used to be in every phone book, but with deregulation, some things have fallen by the wayside. I just didn't want tjkraz to show up at WDW and not have the info available.

if you call from the room and only dial teh area code and number than it is local...if you have to dial 8 + 1 area code and number than it is long distance...i always connect and than call the front desk to confirm it is local...they have that info immed....

When I used dial up in October, I called the operator and asked her what numbers I could use. She checked all the ones I had and told me which ones would be correct to use.

Can anyone tell me what you do with your computers when you leave to go to the parks?
Thank You in Advance,

Thank You in Advance,

I leave mine out on the table, connected to the dataport and plugged in. I have always felt very safe at Disney resorts. The newer resorts have room safes large enough to accommodate a laptop - so if you will worry about ANY of your valuable, be sure to use the safe provided in the room or take things to the front desk for storage in the hotel safe.

Enjoy!

Ditto. Mine is either sitting out or in its case.

I have a cable lock for mine, just to be safe. I wrap it around the end table in the living room, above the bar.

Doc, what is the prefix for a local outside line? Is it 8 or 9? I am setting up my new laptop for dialup. I use 407-641-4266 and 4265 for AOL.

Prefix for local calls is 9. For long distance and toll free dial 8 before the number.

I just returned from SSR. I was told if you had to use the 1 before the 407 it was a long disntace call. If you could just dial 407 it was local. I went through about 10 numbers to connect. I used both AOL, and Netzero

Call the front desk and give them the number. They will be able to tell you if it is local or not. On my trip last week I used a Lake Buena Vista number and it was local.
