Internet 2? What is this?

Someone sent this to me and I was wondering if any of you heard of this?
How can you have a second internet?

It would seem to be some kind of privately owned, high speed network.
According to the web site, it seems to be limited in geographic area, and there are costs involved in using it. They seem to be pushing it for realtime video conferencing, adn other high bandwith use.

So it is not another "internet"?

It looks like they are just using the name "Internet2" as a business name, rather than an "official" description of the network. There are very few limits on what you ca call a product or business, they seem to be using it to "confuse" people into thinking it's the internets next version.

The internet was originally a tool for sharing research between institutions. The Internet2 project was started to get back to these roots. It is a very high bandwidth network that is shared between universities and other research institutions. It is not just business speak, but it is an "internet", just a very restricted one.
