I am a non-practicing Catholic. I think I lead a pretty good life. I'm kind of animals, kind to others, obey the law, and all that happy stuff.:hippie:

My aunt, on the other hand, who swears I will go straight to you-know-where, is a drunken, foul-mouthed, mean woman. And one of those people (I don't know the term) that assists in church with handing out communion.

How is it she's better than me?:confused3 ;)

It may be different in the Catholic church, but in the Methodist tradition, such duties are not assigned based on who lives the better life. We beleive that we are all sinners and no one is better than anyone else, therefore we can not earn something (like serving communion) by how we live, nor should we question the rights and roles of others because we feel we lead a better life than they do. Of course, a certain amount of common sense needs to be applied. If the person's lifestyle interferes with their role or impeeds others, than that person might not be a good choice to help out in that role in the church, but that is simply a matter of practicality, not of who is the better person.

I've come to the conclusion after many years of questioning the church that noone really knows what God wants. I live my life to be the best person I can be and don't worry about what any one else does. I'm much happier now that I don't care about anything. :rotfl:
I go to church for me now and get so much more out of it than I ever did before.

The answer is simple my friend. She goes to confession. If you go to confession, you can be as foul mouthed, rude, inconsiderate and criminal as you would like. Confessing makes it all ok, and makes them/her better than you.:scared:

Real nice  Confession should be for those who really do feel guilty about what they have done and want to ask God's forgiveness for their sins.

In reality the religion of a person may not have a thing to do with how someone acts. There are nice relgious and non religoius just as there are corrupt religious and non as well.

I leave it to God to do any judgements if needed... not my place to do so IMO.

No need to be rude and put down other peoples religions. I think this comment is very uncalled for.

I don't know what to say to the OP. Her judgement day will come.

Eucharistic (sp?) minister - the person who serves communion. I believe that you have to take classes to become one, but it really doesn't have anything to do with if you are a nice person (would be nice though).

I wouldn't say she is better than you, but she thinks she is, but does that really matter. To me it wouldn't, I would consider the source. She doesn't seem like the person I would aspire to be.

The one thing that occurs to me is that I don't know anyone who would describe themselves as a "drunken, foul-mouthed, mean" person. Most people would describe themselves as fundamentally good, kind people and would be loath to imagine themselves any other way.

So what's to say your perception of reality is any more accurate than hers?

I'm also a non- practicing Catholic. I live my life as you do. I know several folks that consider themselves "good Catholics", but they aren't very good/nice people. It's not just Catholics, it applies to those in other religions as well.

I strive to do my best here and now. I'm not concerned about where I'm going after I die, especially since I don't believe we "go" anywhere. Confession doesn't make one a good person, only our daily actions do.

BTW, I predict that this thread will get interesting...;) ;) :lmao:

I think the OP was trying to point out that her aunt thinks that, just because she helps out at the church, that's her "get out of hell free card" which entitles her to be foulmouthed and judgmental.

As for me, I'm just glad that God has a good sense of humor. :thumbsup2

She aint!

It is this kind of logic that keeps me FARRRRRRRRRRR Away from organized religion!!!!!

How nice of you to knock someone else's religion, especially when you clearly don't understand what confession is all about. Might want to get your facts straight next time. I would never bash any aspect of someone else's religion.

Who said she's better than you? Maybe that is coming from you.

I heard a saying once: "Going to church means a person is a Christian about as much as standing in a garage means a person is a car." It's not attending church that makes a person "good", it's their actions in every day life. If all they do is sit in church and have it go in one ear and out the other, and make no attept to practice what is preached, they may as well not bother to attend at all. A person who does that will have a very rude awakening when they stand before God. He won't be a happy camper.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I took this post as sarcastic. :confused3

Did she tell you that she thinks she is better than you? I'm not Catholic, so I can't speak from that perspective, but as a Christian I can tell you that the Bible says we are all sinners--no one is any better than anyone else. God loves you and her equally. It is disappointing that she doesn't seem to feel that she needs to act in a kind-hearted manner. It sounds like she has hurt your feelings, and I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully she will be willing to let God help her change her hurtful behaviors.

That is EXACTLY what I was trying to point out. And to anyone who questions why I think she believes she's better than me - it's because she's told me so - numerous times. She believes my not attending mass is going to be my ticket to the netherworld.:scared1:

Proof once again that religion and morals are often entirely separate concepts.

One can be quite moral without being the least bit religious, and conversely, one can be quite religious without being the least bit moral.

And in between those two, there's quite a bit of grey area in which the majority of people live their lives.
