The October 2007 Outdoor Photographer magazine has an interesting column. It is the Basic Jones column and this month it is called "Too Much Fun!." You can read it online here:

http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/content/2007/oct/basic_jones.shtml (OT - So why do I pay for a subscription if I can read the same articles on-line right away??)

It's about using a p&s instead of an SLR and having fun, taking great shots, etc. Good article to point out that photography is about the photographer, not necessarily the equipment - Good photographers make good photos no matter what equipment they use.

thanks Sharon. That was an interesting article. So how do you like that magazine?

I was just discussing with my DH the other day that I woudl like a smaller camera I can just keep in my purse and pull out when I see something. I don't feel comfortable keeping one of my dSLRs in the van - but wouldn't have an issue keeping something like the Canon S3 or new S5 in my purse.

this article makes me that much more serious about it... and MAY help me convince the hubster. ;)

Bah! My big problem with PnSs is not the quality (well, it is now in the digital era, but not in the film era), but that it's the feel of a "real" camera (SLR, rangefinder, etc) that makes it fun to take pictures with it. Without a focus ring (and zoom ring if not a prime lens), it just doesn't really inspire me.

If I want to leave the other stuff at home, I'd be more interested in taking an old manual-everything film camera with just a single prime lens out.

But I guess I'm just into the whole mechanics of the thing.

DVC Jen, wouldn't a long-zoom PnS be a little big to carry all the time? If you're talking about having one with you at all times and not having it be in the way, I think a little flat 3x zoom camera makes more sense. It saves a little more money for the "real" camera, too. ;)

good article, especially for those who are afraid their p&s photos might make them "second class citizens";)

i've never had a good digital p&s so maybe this wouldn't apply to them but using my daughter's old kodak digital annoyed me to no end due to it's speed. and if he has 3 $400-600 P&s i'd be thinking i could have had a f2.8 lens for that same money( ie the smack on the forehead v8 commercials):rotfl:

about the ot, i am the same way, to me i would rather hold a mag. in my hands and have it to look up things later....so far i just get what looks good that month at barnes and noble but i'm sure a sub is a cheaper way to go but i can never decide which one to get

yeah groucho...if Jen's is anything like mine an elephant could get "misplaced" in side it:lmao: which is why my cell never gets answered when it rings:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: not so big it's just full of junk

I keep a little Canon SD700 IS with me all of the time. I power walk for exercise and there is no way I am going to lug my 1DsMkII everywhere I go, even if the extra weight would help the workout.

As for being creative, I think it can be done with any toy - I have an old D60 converted to an IR only camera, I have multiple Holgas and other toy cameras, a pinhole camera, and several film bodies if I want to be really creative. However, if I want to be spontaneous, that little p&s does the trick!

Oh, you're one of those women! :lmao:

My wife fortunately doesn't really get into the huge bags too much, but she's got a gazillion small- and medium-sized ones. I think that last WDW trip, she came back with 4-5 new bags... she was relatively good at DL and only brought home 1-2 (plus a couple for presents!) Her greatest joy is moving the stuff from bag to bag.

smart woman,
that might be the key to keeping them clutter-free instead of filled with grocery receipts from 1980 like mine is:rotfl:
