Interesting news on mug front

I don't think this change will be of any benefit to us at all. We use the mugs at our own resort, usually just when we are swimming but I certainly couldn't be bothered to carry 5 mugs around with us when we go to other resorts. i try to carry the minimum required. I guess its good for people who do split stays but thats about it

It works for some, not for others.
Trailing to the fountains can be very inconvenient, quality of soda is very mixed, some don't taste great (I assume the mix with water direct from the tap, this varies in taste) some machine are not very fizzy etc.

We prefer bottled, cost $1.37 for 2L for Coca Cola in April.

I see your point. I guess I have always been lucky with room locations and have never been more than a couple of minutes from a beverage station. As for quality, if the soda tastes nasty I will chuck it and try another dispenser. I am staying in SSR in October and hope to get Congress Park area, which I reckon is quite a trek from the soda dispensers. I will still buy the mugs for the time we spend around the resort but I will also buy bottled as the rooms have full sized fridges :-)

Not only do people take back old mugs they also use other containers. We have seen people using things like McD paper cups. Also see CM's filling bottles to take out. System has been totally abused.

Are there any plans to change the waterpark system? although there is a way to skirt the rules it isn't abused as much as the resorts.

The article said that they were hoping to roll out the system across the water parks too (unless I read it wrong - which is totally possible!).

Crazy that people are filling anything they can get their hands on. No wonder they are changing the system.

No resorts allow pool hopping (not that I've ever had an ID checked. Closest we came was at BLT where you need your KTTW to open the gate).

DVC Members are allowed to pool hop but there are a few restrictions (storm along bay and Kidani I believe). This is not generally a perk we use as we prefer to stick to our resort pool but at times we have gone to other resorts and used the pool bars and been asked for our DVC card. Definitely at the Poly and GF.

Thanks Laura, I didn't know that. So you can even use non DVC pools? That's pretty cool. :) Glad they checked your card. :)

Yes any pool thats not listed in the exceptions. (I think theres a 3rd pool thats not allowed) Your not allowed on certain dates (eg 4th July weekend) and not if the pool is at capacity. :)

I can't see it'll bring that many extra offsite visitors into the resorts.

Would you bother leaving a theme park to pay $9 for a mug that you can only fill at hotels you're not staying in? I can't see the logic in doing so.

But then I also can't understand pool hopping as I'd only ever swim at my resort so I had somewhere to shower and change afterwards.

I agree. When I used to stay off-site, the last thing I wanted to do was venture to the Disney hotels. I never saw a Disney hotel until I started saying on-site. I just don't think off-site guests would gain a whole lot from it either.

The way I see it, unless you're spending a lot of time at a resort hotel, the resort mugs don't really offer a huge value. We always get the mug as part of the free dining but I wouldn't pay for one because I just don't think you get much value out of it.

Off-site guests are not going to leave a park to get a free refill. If they're not staying at a resort hotel, they're not going to spend too much time at them. Who goes to WDW to hang out around the hotels? If they do go to the resort hotels, it'll probably be for a quick look around or a meal where they get free refills anyway (apparently it's up to 4 refills on standard paper cups within an hour period).

It wouldn't make sense in my mind for off-site guests to buy one.

And BLT and now GF due to the addition of the villas

When we stay offsite we visit a different hotel every day for dinner but I really couldn't see the benefit of buying the mugs. I'd rather had a fridge full of cans bought at Walmart

The last time we stayed off site (Feb 2011) we bought a mug from POR and used it A LOT and got our monies worth. But we park hop a lot and go via a resort hotel often. We have always taken our mugs out with us to the parks. We stayed at the Wyndham in LBV so used our mugs a lot in POR on the way back from a park in the evenings and we could then jump in the boat back to DTD back to the Wyndham. Not so sure we'd do it now if we stayed off resort and could only refill it in POR but if we didn't get it included in our WDW resort stays then I would still def buy one.:)

I'll preface this by saying we buy new mugs every trip (unless we get the free with the dining plan). Having said that...$17.99?? I'm sure last November when we bought our mugs they were $14.49. What exactly am I getting for that extra $3.50? The joy of waiting 5 minutes between refills like I'm some soda-guzzling criminal?! Mind you though, that doesn't look so bad when comparing it to the "short stay" prices! It would be nice if they improved their resort beverage selection to compensate.

Rant over!

Whilst our kids used the mugs (because we had them as part of the DDP) we found that the Trek at CBR & OKW was too much of a pain to make good use of them (POFQ was not too bad as we were close to food court)

However - what we did do was use them for other drinks- from our room DH would fill his with Bud and I would fill mine with Red Wine to take to the pool - ok not very civilised to drink a disney patterned plastic cup of Red Wine but it alway seemed more discreet!
