Interesting idea

My boss made an interesting suggestion today. He said that he thinks all this weird weather in the gulf was caused by the tsunami.

What do you think of that idea?

I never thought about that but it is intriguing. He just might be right. Unfortunately, I know little about weather so I don't know if his theory has merit.

Possibly, but unlikely. The prevailing wisdom surrounding hurricanes is that they run in 20 or 30 year cycles. This is a snip of an article published in May of 2000

The hurricane activity of the next 20 years should resemble the period that began in the late 1920s and lasted through the 1940s. The increase is due to higher salinity content in the Atlantic Ocean, which alters its currents and increases average ocean temperatures, fueling more storms. Gray emphasizes that this is a cyclical trend and has nothing to do with global warming (CNN, April 22, 2000).

The link is http://www.globalwarming.org/article.php?uid=286

So while it seems a convenient excuse, they were talking about it 5 years ago.

If you google Hurricane cycles, you'll see lots of articles on this.

Interesting. I don't understand why the salinity would increase the number and strength of the local hurricanes in a given area.

Read some of the articles. Like This one from National Geographic. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/06/0608_040608_hurricanes.html

There is a paragraph on the 2nd page that explains about higher salinity causing warmer water temps, and warm water is what causes Hurricanes to thrive.

And it's just been the damn unluck of the draw that so many of these monsters have made significant landfall.

I was watching the Weather channel earlier this week and they were talking about why all of the Hurricanes are so bad and it does have to do with the Global warming. The weather has been so hot way above normal for many weeks this past summer and even for Spring, which means the Ocean will have a warmer temp. and that is how the Hurricanes take form. I don't think this is the end of these which is what scares me the most. We have 2 more months of this.

Aren't Tsunami's caused by earthquakes?

Hurricanes have nothing to do with plate tectonics and earthquakes.

As far as how smart it is to live on the coast--about as smart as living any place else. No worse than living in tornado alley or on a fault line. There are risks--calculate carefully and live where you choose to live. You choose not to live on the coast--more room for me. I am properly insured.

There really is no place immune to potential weather disaster--and some areas are more prone than others.

The economy thrives on people living by the coast for import/export/govt and of course tourism reasons.

It's all about respecting mother nature and not fighting her.

It's good that these subjects come up - because I'm not that familiar with why these things happen - I knew that tsunamis were caused by earthquakes, but didn't know about high salinity in the ocean causing warmer water temps.

It's good to be informed so misconceptions can be corrected - so don't feel bad, totalia! :grouphug: That's how we all learn. :dog2:

No clue, but I'll NEVER live in the South. The weather and bugs just seem awful, plus the threat of hurricanes. I like the Midwest, it rhymes with "best." ;)

Well thanks for pointing out it's not smart to live on the coast...I think I will put my house up for sale.

Tsunami effect..um yeah I don't think so.

*nods* Makes you wonder how smart it is to live on the coast.

::yes:: I have always had dreams of living near the coast but now my dreams having me living a lot farther inland.
