Had to drive down the mountain to go to my granddaughters birthday party earlier this evening and noticed something interesting with the gas prices..

The first gas station I came to was a national type:

Exxon $3.09

The next was also a national type:

Mobil $2.99

Further down there were 3 convenience store type places and their prices were:

$2.89

$2.85

$2.80

Next there was another national type:

Mobil $2.95

Then the convenience type store where I got my gas:

$2.79

--------------------------

Has anyone else noticed that the convenience type stores tend to be cheaper? I got 3/4's of a tank for $20 - took 1/4 of a tank or less to get back up here - so I still have a little over a half tank left.. That will do me fine because I really have no place to go..

I have noticed this to. The explanation I have heard is that national gas is 'branded" meaning that it is, for example Exxon brand gas, and therefore more expensive. Gas at a convience store such as Wawa (a store around here), is cheaper because it is basically generic. Does that make sense? I could be completly wrong but that is what I was told.

Could be.. :confused3 If that's the case though, I have always used "generic" gas and never had problems with my vehicles so I guess I'll keep right on buying the cheap stuff.. :teeth:

Thats what they tell people LOL the same gas comes from the same refineries. Doesnt matter whose name is on the truck.

the Exxon 91 octane- is the same as WaWa's 91 octane.

I think Exxon has more overhead LOL

C.Ann- Was this at a Stewarts? If so, I'm definitely going to start getting my gas there!

Yes - all of the Stewarts were cheaper than the nationals.. I always get my gas at Stewarts anywhere I can find one and have never had any problems.. I get the regular unleaded..

I heard it is becuz some gas stations, mostly big ones, have locked in rates, like we can get for heating oil. The little ones shop around for lowest price. Also, the gas price stays what they pay for it until they get another fill at another price. ie. Sounds like the Exxon still is selling at the price they last bought at...

not sure, but that is what I heard...

Our local news noticed that and did a special on it this week. Whole bunch of gobbleykook, and ended by saying the nationals will reflect the higher price quicker, because of the way they order their gas..however, they are also quicker to reflect the lower price..which is what we noticed last week. We just buy it where ever it's cheapest, except for Sunoco. For some reason our cars don't behave the same if we use Sunoco..maybe coincidence. This week the nationals hardly has time to show the new lower price, and off it was higher again. Three days ago Stewarts was higher than Mobile..then up Mobile went.

We just got our new car (Toyota Corolla..4th Totota, but the first was an '82..so they last and last and last..the last two are still being used by family members), and it came with a full tank, so we won't need to buy gas for awhile...unless we go out and do the bad thing..top it off. Dang, I had to really work hard to get this car as cheap as I did..with the gas prices, everyone seems to want one.

I'm toying with looking at a couple of horses and a covered wagon.. ;) If it was good enough for Ma Ingalls, it should be good enough for me.. :teeth:

Does this only happen when driving "DOWN A MOUTAIN" ? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

DH and I both went to the same gas station yesterday, BJ"s, he went around 9:00am and he paid $2.89, I went around noon and I paid $2.79. It had came down yesterday here!
