I was not well on Friday and decided to stay home. I think it was just a stomach virus, and by late afternoon, I was feeling myself again.

At that point, DS and I were watching television and saw a commercial that advertised reproductions of a U.S. gold coin that was minted in the 1930’s. I inherited one of those coins (i.e., an original from 1933 from my father) and told DS that. He wanted to see it, so I dug it out from my closet. It was in a bag containing many other bits of memorabilia from my folks.

I discovered a series of letters written by my maternal grandmother, who I’d never met since she died 12 years before I was born. The letters were dated from early in my parents’ marriage (1949-1950) and came at a time when my grandmother was very sick. She died from lung cancer (never smoked a cigarette in her life, BTW) in May of 1950. I don’t suppose there was much doctors could do for such an illness back then.

Anyway, the letters were fascinating to me because I never knew my grandmother; her writings give me a sense of her personality. My mother never talked very much about her. I guess it was painful for her to remember and talk about her. She was only 25 when her mom died. (How ironic—I was only 26 when my mother died.)

I’ve been teary-eyed over these letters since Friday. They opened a window on myself I never knew existed. Want to know the funniest thing? Her writings sound a lot like mine. I suspect I may have inherited some of her personality.

Don't you love it when you find unexpected treasures. I love finding out about my ancestors.

Bet those letters are worth more to you than the gold coin. You're lucky to have those letters. I'm sure you'll treasure them!

So true, A&H.

It's amazing that these letters lasted all these years; I feel like someone wanted me to find them now for some reason. They're written in pencil on recycled-type paper. It's incredible that the words haven't faded away or the paper hasn't crumbled. Maybe because they were tucked into an envelope, the air didn't destroy them.

One thing really made me laugh out loud when I read it. My grandmother mentioned that a neighbor of theirs had a baby seven months after her wedding. She said, "they say the child is premature, but I don't think so." Procreation before the wedding was such a no-no in 1950. Who would even mention such a thing nowadays?

She also talked about the work schedule of the coal miners in town (they lived near Wilkes-Barre, PA). What a coindence to turn on the TV and hear about the coal miners who were trapped. I prayed for them all weekend; I'm so relieved it was a happy outcome.

What a nice weekend find, Janice. It is nice to reach back and share with family like that. Very nice indeed. Glad you were able to share with us too.

Wow.... how wonderful. A real find! It is wonderful to get to make a connection with someone long after they are gone.

I dont Journal, but I do very detailed trip reports (even before the 'boards' and I have several really long letters I wrote to my girls while they were still in my tummy. :-) I hope they find them 1/2 as interesting as your letters seem! LOL

I would be teary eyed too, I wish I had letters or something from my grandmother. I would treasure them so much. I'm a little envious of you, sweetie

Sometimes nostalgia can really tug at the heartstrings.

Sounds like you had a very special afternoon, JJ. I'm glad for you. :)

That truly sounds like an amazing find you have there! Definitely something to be treasured. I am so glad you were able to know your grandmother a little better through those writings.

Janice, am I mistaken, or were you born about the time that your grandma died?

Regardless, I think it's really great that you found them. And like nativetxn, I'm a little envious. :)

Isn't that fun? I inherited a lot of post card sent to my maternal great grandmother. These were written as her children ( my grandfather included) were growing up from about 1900-1920. It was such fun to read them! It not only gave me a look at their personalities, but also of life in that time on a family farm.

I also think personality and character are VERY inherited. My DS is EXACTLY like my grandmother! He has her sense of humor, easy going attitude and happy go lucky style. She passed away long before he was born, but he seems to be her reincarnation!

That is so cool Janice!

I had a similar experience when I was a late teenager. My parents were away for the weekend and I was looking for some pictures. I came across a box with letters and cards that my parents exchanged while my dad was away at Army boot camp.
Reading these made me realize, in my stupid teenagerness, that my parents and especially my mom were real people with real feelings similar to the ones I was having at the time. It was an eye opener for me!

My DH and I have a bunch of letters to each other from when we were separated due to the Navy and DH wants to toss them, but I think we should save them. It is a little bit of our family history.

Serena, my grandmother who wrote the letters died in May of 1950. My oldest brother was born in March of that year. I was not born until September, 1962.

There are two letters dated early in 1950; in both, my grandmother talks about my mother expecting her first child. Her words are so tender, and her love for my mother is so apparent. And it’s so sad, too, because they obviously knew she was dying by then.

Nuke, do save those letters; put them in a sealed envelope to preserve them, though. I don't think the letters I found would have lasted all these years if they weren't.

Whoa, that just gave me goosebumps! I love stuff like this.

I know you must treasure that letter, Janice! I found a letter my mother wrote me when she was alive - didn't discover it until a couple of years after her death. It truly is one of my most treasured things in life, and like you said, I feel like there was a reason why I didn't discover the letter until I did.
