Interesting "critter conversation" with housekeeping

Err I'm staying at the CSR next year, and now think I should be asking for a first floor room!!

I'm from the UK and knew that critters were around, but somehow the thought of a snake coming into my room feels me with dread horror!! I'm not that great with our wildlife and its nothing like the wildlife I'm hearing about exists in Orlando!

Although we do have birds of prey land in our gardens over here, when my dog was a puppy a Sparrow Hawk landed in the garden to take off with her! I just happened to look out of the window to see this large bird waddling towards to my puppy! I dashed out and the bird flew off, but it had a huge wing span and pictures on the internet identified the bird in question! My poor dog has been terrified of birds ever since.

First floor over here means ground floor. You want second floor.

Which is the reason we ask for highest floor available. First stay at CBR wayyyyyyyy back in 1999, ducks were trying to come in. Shortly realized (hey, I am from MN, we don't have the same critters here) that other things could try, too...snakes, gators, etc.

Yes, they can all climb, but I choose to believe they are lazy and will go for the first available spot...why pass up 3+ floors to come to my room on the 4th? ;)

Yup, known that for a while. Have heard of frogs and snakes in 1st floor rooms.

If you are staying at a value or moderate your door opens to outside no matter what floor. You may have less chance on higher floors but you are not immune to bugs, critters, snakes or any other wildlife entering your room. If you are at deluxe with balcony ... you also risk guests to your room.

Snakes crawl up walls .... and can get in upper rooms. Key is keep your door shut! Don't prop it.

Florida is one giant wildlife preserve. While you likely won't get one of the Disney deer, hogs or cougars coming close to your room there are rabbits, ducks, raccoons, snakes, frogs, lizards, squirrels, lots of birds and if you go close to the water, turtles, alligators ...... In just a few short days at my home I saw a 3+ foot rattlesnake on a busy sidewalk and two 3+ foot snakes in my garden right next to my screen porch, while I was watering flowers.

As a person living so far north that snakes is not a problem I would honestly probably end up beeing so stupid that I slept with the door open for fresh air since I often do that here at home. :rolleyes1 Thanks for the warning though!! Now I will remember my stupidity. Lol :D

Nooooooooo don't do that, unless there is a tight screen. :scared:

hahaha - my sister had a first floor room at the Poly and left the sliders open for only a few minutes. A family of ducks waddled right into her room!

There are cast members who patrol the lazy rivers at the water parks, with hooks, and corral any snakes that might want to go for a swim! All these animals are native to the area (and are God's creatures, so don't hurt them!).

My friend is at All Star Movies right now on the first floor and had a problem with millipedes in their room.
I absolutely hate snakes!!! I like to think like the other poster who hopes they stay on the lower floors! : )

I can't imagine leaving a door or window open with those little lizards everywhere! We chased 3 or 4 around our 2nd floor room at OKW. They're not scary but I still wouldn't want one crawling on us or going home in our luggage! We would catch it with a bowl or glass and bring them back outside. DD4 thought it was a riot :)

BTW, snakes can climb. Don't leave your balcony door open either.

OMG, I hadn't thought about that. I just always thought that if I was on a high floor, I was fairly safe to leave my balcony door open. Note to self-ALWAYS shut the balcony door.

At Disney now, there are rat traps all over the grounds.

We saw one this past Wednesday evening right by the Beer place (cannot think of the name) it was the size of a kitten. I thought the CM would pass out, we bought saw it at the same time.

Have seen a few snakes at CBR. Had 2 deer walk across the tee box at Lake Buena Vista Golf course a few years back...didn't seem afraid of me hitting them with my tee shot...must have been watching me play for a while. 8-)

Not sure what you mean by beer place....the Craft Beers building at Epcot (the former Oasis restaurant) or perhaps the German showcase? Both are at Epcot. Anyway, thank God I saw just the traps and no actual rats!

I would never leave a door or window open while in Florida. Doesn't housekeeping leave the room door ajar when they are cleaning?

Sorry senior moment here.
It was outside the Craft Beers.

I think the main thing is just don't leave anything open. I've lived in different parts of the south, and so far I've seen either in the backyard, on the porch, in the house, or at work:

Frogs
Snakes
Lizards
Newts
Possums
Raccoons
Rabbits
Foxes
Deer
Wild turkey
Mice
Squirrels
Bats
Armadillos
Ants
Spiders
Hornets / wasps / bees
Mosquitos
June bugs / beetles
Love bugs

One place I lived in Florida by the water, we had a panther, alligators, snakes, and sharks in the backyard, but the raccoons caused us the most issues.

Also, except in Fl, I've always lived in town, not in the country.

One of the times that scared me the most was a red fox which snuck in a door they had propped open at work. No one noticed it had gotten in and closed everything up. The next day, I was at work alone, and it jumped out from behind a box and about gave me a heart attack.

A few other times we have had possums and raccoons that have gone right up to our back door at night. It always makes me so nervous because we are right inside making noise, and the lights are on, and they aren't scared at all. If the door had been open, they would have come right in.

My last cautionary tail, involves my mom. When she was younger, she woke both her parents up and told her them there was a flying monster in her room. They thought she had a nightmare and told her to go back to bed. This happened a few times before my grandmother finally saw something and told her husband to get in there and get whatever it was. Well, what it was was a flying squirrel. I think they chased that thing around the house half the night before they caught it.

Ok.... thank you all for the freaky stories! I will never again leave the balcony door open... even for a minute! We are always on a higher floor but the climbing snakes just about did me in.

But now I will be worried about the people before us leaving the door open or the mousekeeping leaving the door open. o_O

Wow

Those deer aren't very bright, given the presence of the coyotes!

The deer in our area dont seem to be annoyed by the coyotes. Nor are the chippies, the squirrels, or the turkeys or the bears that are all over the place. House pets.....another story. I get so upset when I see them outside, you know their days will be numbered.

I also watch for the hawks and the eagles that nest nearby. WHen I babysit my son's little pooch I never let the little thing take off on his own.
