...on the front page of our local paper, Harrisburg's Patriot News (sometimes referred to as "The Fish Wrapper Gazzette"). From the NY Tmes, it spoke of the change of direction of the Atkins diet specifically towards limiting saturated fat in the diet. I know one of the major criticisms of Atkins from the medical community is that the ORIGINAL diet, as written, made it seem that one could have unlimited fat in the diet as long as one restricted carbs. What the original 1992 text said was that beef, pork, lamb and butter were on the list of "foods you may eat liberally." To quote the first paragraph of the story:

"The have been advising dieters for years to satisfy their hunger with liberal amounts of stead, eggs, and other saturated fats.

Now the promoters of the Atkins diet say people on their plan should limit the amount of red meat and stturated fat they eat."

The new message is only 20% of the diets calories should come from saturated fats.

Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. When I hear medical professionals say that eating bacon and eggs all of the time is so bad for you I just  and laugh. You would think medical professionals would make sure they are well informed before they start sharing their wisdom. My physician's assistant said that very thing to me when I started Atkins. I told her maybe she should read the book. Thankfully, our other doctors are more well informed.

We eat less meat now than we did before Atkins. We eat less of everything than before we started Atkins. Our appetites are under control now. When we do eat meat, which is rarely more than once a day, it is usually chicken or pork. We have bacon maybe once a month on the weekend. We've had more salad in the last 7 months than we have had in probably 5 years. :o

I really don't think giving up Wonderbread and Twinkies is going to be the end of me. ;)

When I was reading the article, I was thinking the same thing - so many doctors and other medical professionals are quick to condem the high-protien, low-carb diets off-hand without researching. I am on South Beach, and Dr. Agatston even says in his book that he was looking at trying to figure out a diet that would get his patient's blood pressure and insulin production under control. He had to do a lot of research because he's a cardiologist, not a dietician. The surprise side effect of the diet was that his patients lost a pile of weight and kept it off. We had a little scare this week with my 11-year-old son and had to take him to a pediatric cardiologist (the boy is fine, Thank God). I was speaking to the doc and we got on the subject of diet. I told him about South Beach and he was VERY interested and said he was going to check it out.

My dh's cardiologist, electrophysiologist and endicrinologist are all thrilled DH is on the diet and doing so well. With his health history he's very well monitored and everything is excellent. The diabetes doc couldn't be happier with his blood work. He was diagnosed type II but with diet alone has brought his sugars into the prediabetic range.

I'm gald to hear your ds is ok, Jerry. :) My dd has been experiencing shortness of breath and based on her fathers health history she had to go for an EKG and chest xray this week and we're still awaiting the results. It's pretty nerve wracking.
