Interesting Article on Superdome, Convention Center

[What the Heck]

Without reading the article..I think it was smart of the media to "hype" of the convention center and Superdome.

I am very pleased the death toll was only 10. Hard to say without knowing who these people were and what they're ailments were if being at these locations had everything, only partially, or really nothing to do with their deaths.

I am very very happy that the overall death toll appears to be only a fraction of what the estimates were.

As botched as everything ended up being--it actually showed that what did happen....did result in a more positive human outcome than initially expected.

However, what you call being "botched as everything ended up being" is part of the hype that was going on. There were problems, as there are with any hurricane. It was a natural disaster that hit us hard, and the passion of the press helped with the blame game - "why wasn't more done earlier, oh the horror, oh the humanity". Now the "horror" may not have been as horrible, but press selling. As many things as did go wrong, when it comes to the blame game, we might just have a little bit of "wag the dog" going on for all levels.

The convention center was botched--due to FEMA's own admission (they didn't know about it).

I gave it 48 hours. After 48 hours with pretty much nothing...it was botched.

2 days is AMPLE time for aid to be begin being delivered in any fashion to a specific area. It took twice as long in downtown.

Been there done that with hurricanes! It was painfully an unacceptably slow.

As was it in certain sections of Mississippi.

It doesn't take rocket science to see that it was all botched.

Oh the horror--oh the humanity. No matter what level..the media's presence made it very clear that these people weren't waiting at the ritz.

There is a difference between "did not happen" and "There is no evidence".

The worst exaggerations were by the Mayor not the Media (o.k. the Media continued the story).

Rapes are now being reported, and these stories are turning out to be close to the truth. I don't think there is yet any proof about the very young child being raped and dying from the incident.

I don't trust the government more than the media. I think the media makes it more difficult for the government to hide the truth.
If there were not news tapes, of Police looting, I believe this would have been completely denied and reported later as having been false. (Actually the report would have said “there is no evidence” and worded in such a way as to get most people to conclude that the reports of such looting were false).

At least one news person (one that I trust) claims to have seen (and filmed) bodies that were obviously victims of violence. She also claimed the pictures were to gruesome to show to the public. I am certain she has shown them to the authorities.
There are some news reporters that quickly over emotionalize and exaggerate. There are others that report what they have seen and heard, and report in such a way that they state when they are basing their information on what they hear from others versus see them selves. ALL the major news channels have both types of reporters. (O.K. Fox is guilty of having the one reporter I most expect to exaggerate, but they also have one of the reporters I most trust to state the facts).

I do believe the media played a role in getting the government moving on getting the people out of New Orleans.
That particular task took way to long. I really think that the President did NOT know what was going on, and was not being told the truth by his advisers until Thursday. That is why there was such a significant turn around on Friday.

I no longer trust in my Government to provide law and order after a disaster.
I am considering two new additions to my own emergency supplies.
1) Water purification, the type that removes metals as well as killing bacteria
2) Some sort of weapon. It won’t do me any good to have a good stash of the supplies I need;If someone bigger than me can just come and take them from me.
I pay a lot in taxes, and the one thing I ask of my government (state and federal levels) is to quickly provide some sort of law and order if that system breaks down.
I don’t expect them to pay me to repair my home.
I don’t expect them to provide water and food right away, however at some point it would be nice.
I do expect them to provide what is needed in a shelter that they direct me too. If they don't let me bring a weapon into the shelter, than I expect those running the shelter to provide law and order and leadership to guide such things as sanitation.
I certainly don’t expect the government to pay me to re-build my life (although if they offer I won't refuse the money).
I will be content if they help out in the initial stages; providing me with a rescue if needed, a short term stay in a shelter that has clean water to drink and first aid if I need it, and then with some services that help me figure out how to re-build my own life.

I believe that the violence was not exaggerated and that there is a coverup being done so that people will not be scared to go to New Orleans in the future. They may have found few bodies IN the Superdome and Convention Center--maybe. Do they say how many they found around it? I know people that were AT the Convention Center and they are traumatized. I KNOW people who worked in a hospital who were afraid for their life and thought they were not going to live to be evacuated. I don't think they will ever get over it. Just last week in the New Orleans paper, there were a report that a group of deputies from another state found a dead woman in scrubs, possibly a nurse in the E.R. area, with a head bashed in and pants pulled down to ankles. They wanted to know why it was never publicized.
