There may be something on here to tell me.....but how does this whole DVC thing work? You have to buy the points or can you only rent them for your vacation? And how can I find out how much it cost to do it and and how it all works?
Read the stickies at the top of the section. It is a timeshare. You can either purchase an ownership interest, or rent points for an individual trip from one of the owners.
Once you are logged into the boards, you can visit the Rent/Trade Board on the DVC Boards. There are sticky threads at the top of that board to give you more information on "renting points". You actually purchase a reservation from a member who made it with their real estate interest (points attached to one DVC resort). So Disney is not involved with your reservation and the member owns it until you check in.

go to the point charts here for the point cost per night at each resort for different types of villas, and figure how many pts you need to vacation at disney the way you prefer:
and be aware that DVC rentals are often like priceline reservations - no refunds for cancellations. also, there is no free daily housekeeping - you get housekeeping (in some form) every 4 days or so.
if you decide you're going to disney every year or so and enjoy DVC stays and want to save a little more money, here's a good link:
here is a lot more information about the different resorts (including annual dues per point for each resort for ongoing DVC ownership costs - annual dues are like upkeep costs for a house - even after you pay off your home mortgage there are still costs for plumbers, painting, lawn care, insurance and taxes):
