Interested in DVC...need your help please

My family will be visiting in June of this year at OKW. We are interested in possibly buying into WLV.

This is all very confusing to a novice so you're help would be appreciated...

We would most likely vacation to WDW every other year in either February (winter break) or in June, as long as we have kids in school which will be for at least the next 18 years!! If we start out at 150 points, would we have enough to stay in a 2br every other year for a week (by borrowing/banking)?

Also if we buy in, can you choose when your use year is? Based on the vacation schedule I mentioned, what would be a good use year(month), or does it reaaly matter?

It will cost approx. 286 to 314 points in
Feb. and 306-350 points in June depending on the view. It doesn't seem that 150 points will be enough for your family to go everyother year.

When we purchased from disney for our original points we were not given a choice of our use month though will we were in the process of deciding they sold out of a particualar month that we really didn't want and moved on the the next month that was more appealing.

We originally purchased 175 2 years ago and have recently purchased a resale for an additional amount of points; we found we were going more often then the planned every other year.

Don't forget to get your MB credits when you go.

yes if you don't try to stay on Fri and Sat - those days will cost you between 72 to 75 points each day.

Without Fri and Sat - the points are 170 to 200 points for Mon thru Thrusday

Add Fri and Sat points are 314 to 350 for the week. Feb is not off season - spring break is happening. Sept and Dec are off season and my favorite time to visit.

Call 1-800-800-9100 and ask for the free DVC video and information packet. Do plan to take the DVC tour on your next trip. You will already have a great idea about OKW!

Don't get too hung up on use year- it is merely the month when your points are renewed each year. Otherwise, it only comes into play if you cancel a reservation. If sales continue to be brisk at VWL, there may not be a lot of choice available then anyway. If you can choose, select a Use year just before you will likely travel, but again- don't make an issue of use year- it is not all that important. Enjoy!

By staying only ONE weekend night, you will save significantly on points. We always fly into Orlando and usually a Sat. night stay is required, so many times we have stayed 6 nights instead of the seven. Or, we have stayed both weekend nights elsewhere and paid cash, and then checked in for the 5 lower point nights. You can be very creative with your points. Going every other year, it seems 150 would do nicely to start. There are some lower point resales on listed on this board. They are, of course, not at WLV, but you might check out the other resorts when you are down at WDW. Good luck with your decision.

We figured we would need at least 170 pts for the same scenario as you. We figured every other year in a 2 BR at BW. If you are set on VWL, Disney has attractive financing and points from use year date (usually year before). We really want to buy in to BCV when they come available, but found a resale contract at BW for $62/pt (after many rumors said they were selling for $68/pt)Both Pat Spell from The Timeshare store (link above) and Jaki Apetz from A timeshare broker are great to deal with and can help you. Just make sure you try to negotiate and that the contracts have points left or banked from present and previous year for best value.

I'd agree with looking at using DVC for 6 (or even 5) nights of your stay ( avoiding Friday or Saturday) will make a massive difference to your points needs.

For use year if possible I think you want to be about 6 months away from your "usual" vacation time. This gives you some room to reschedule if your holiday gets cancelled at the last minute. In your case I think a use year of Oct/Nov or Dec would be best. It means should your June break get changed you have at least 3 months to reschedule and you will have plenty of time to make your plans for banking and borrowing.

Thanks for your insight! It is very helpful. We've ordered the informational packet from DVC so hopefully it will clear up some of my initial questions.

Hopefully the points won't go up by the time we're down there in June to check things out!

The one thing that you need to be careful of is planning to avoid weekends. As more and more people do this, it costs us more dues and DVC becomes more likely to even out the difference between the days of the week. If you buy planning to avoid weekends like the plague, one day DVC may even out the points and you will no longer be able to take the vacation you planned.
