Intelligent Design Struck Down in PA

I saw this earlier, I was wondering if someone was gong to start a thread :) I'm glad the court can see hte difference between a religiously based theory and a scientifically based theory with supporting evidence.

That's good news for science!

Totally. This whole debate scares the heck out of me. How can you look at a dinosaur fossil and say the earth is only 10,000 years old, or whatever the old testament says? I'm not religious, but if I were, I'm not sure how I would reconcile dinosaurs with my beliefs about creation.

Was it struck down by a lighting bolt from the heavens?

The Bible doesn't say how old the earth is. It says creation was in 7 days. But Jesus used metaphors (parables) to teach, so I think God was just using a metaphor that would be easier for us to understand.

This is good news. Intelligent design is a belief, not a scientific theory. Because it is based on faith, it is not something that should be taught in the classroom. As a matter of faith and religion, it belongs in the church.

As I was reading the story, I was wondering if the Dover School Board was going to appeal - then I remembered they all got replaced in the election last month. :rotfl:

Then I saw that the reported mentioned that very fact.

Good.

Real SCIENCE belongs in science class. Teach "intelligent design" in religion or philosophy class.

ITA.

I am curious if WDWHound will chime in. He has always spoke quite eloquently about how the science does not detract from the bible - how they can succesfully and respectfully coexist.

I am religious and I am very glad the court saw this case for what it was. Scientific fact is for school to teach not some half baked quasi hidden religious ideas.

i had to do a report on this thing.

thing is...while its good for science..is that all there is? Science? By other acts (not this one...this is alot to do with personal belief...and in science it doesnt belong there at all times) this has caused people to turn only to science....this has no help, but neither does putting full trust in a God or what ever you believe in. We must learn that God is there...but so is modern discovery and medicine.

While I believe in a God and that he created the universe in 6 days and rested on the 7th I allow my teachers to teach me of the Big Bang theaory. Its better to get both sides of the story and then make a choice...most people dont do that and it can be a real problem.

I believe in God and that God created everything, and I still know that evolution is a fact. I don't quite understand what you're getting at by saying "this has caused people to turn only to science"--could you explain?

Excellent! Hope this trend continues. Religion belongs in a church pew and the home, not a public school. :teacher:

Excellent. :cool1:

If this went the other direction it would have been time to start a campaign to get evolution taught in private religious schools. Fair is fair right?

Not that I would agree with it, but it is the kind of thing that people on the other side are always claiming heathens try and do. 'bout time we actually did. ;)

As a teacher and a Christian, I find it a little too shaky to read a "statement" about Intellegent Design into the curriculum. How can any adult, let alone a high school student, interperate intelligent design in any way but a reference to a Deity? I do think that the Bible and Science can go hand and hand, but that can be taught at home or in Sunday School.

That's just the tip of the mount as well. Can you imagine the turmoil from these same folks after the get their way, and then it isn't being taught "correctly".

I can't imagine the people fighting for I.D. liking the idea of their religion being taught as a theory and and having other religious theories included as well.

in a class this year for world cultures and religions i had to go to a public place and ask people if they believed in a God, if they did, what did they call it, and if they prayed or put their lives into doctors and modern medicinea and the big bang, things like that. So i went to the most diverse places...the park, McDonalds, and a Wawa (no shortage of them here!) People who believed in a God were the majority, but nobody prayed to a God, they told me that the Big Bang Theory was the only way, and Science was what there was...and that is better than a God. So what im getting at is that while there were some people who put faith in a God, and went against the majority, the fact is, as we discover more, our trust in God becomes less (as a majority).

Both of my children attend(ed) private religious schools, and they were both taught evolution. DS even did a report on Charles Darwin. They both have/had to attend chapel weekly, and took bible classes in elementary school. DD had to take a religion class, which discussed ALL religions, as will DS...it is required for graduation.
