This is the first time we're looking at the possibility of getting insurance, how much more is it if you buy it after PIF? And how will pre-existing conditions affect it? I could really use some guidance and advice in this area. We don't care about cancelation so much as we want to make sure possible evacuations and medical needs are covered.

I just bought mine well after paid in full and it wasn't any more expensive than its been previously. Different policies had different rules on pre-existing conditions. I didn't pay much attention though because we fortunately don't have any.

Each policy is different in when it must be purchased and how pre-existing conditions are handled.

If you aren't looking for cancellation insurance, there are travel policies for just medical coverage/evacuation during travel that are significantly cheaper than full travel insurance policies. You might want to check into those.

We paid in full in January and just bought insurance for EBTA cruise in May.
Medical needs what we were interested in too, we covered the cruise and 5 days in Rome after the cruise.
We paid about $340ish. My husband went to a sight to compare the different choices, he chose the John Hancock policy.
Ours covers some cancellations, but not an any reason cancellation.

If you are particularly interested in coverage for pre-existing conditions, I suggest before you buy that you specifically ask the vendor about those to make sure you will get the coverage you desire/need. The best time to purchase coverage that includes a PEC waiver (pre-existing conditions) is within a short time after initial deposit when several policies will include it for no extra charge. After that point, it may depend on the coverage you want, but expect to pay extra above what a "typical" policy may cost to receive the PEC.
