So hope I can get some canadian help here - Going to Orlando on August 21st to September 1st and meeting up with my parents down there (who are travelling from Scotland). I'm a new PR in Canada living in Vancouver, so this is the first time I've really had to deal with trip insurance over here, and was just looking for recommendations for travel + medical insurance (touch wood that I won't have to use it).

I'm with RBC and got a quote and it was rather extortionately expensive haha so just wanting to check other places out :D

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if you've already paid for your trip or not, but we pay ours with our TD Visa.

Automatic trip insurance up to $1000.00 per person & out of country medical expenses. I want to say something like a million (wasn't listening when DH was detailing it ;) , but I remember it being quite a bit.

Ok I tried again through the RBC site, and managed to get through with my credit card and coming up with a much more manageable $50. Not sure where I was before on the RBC site but was getting quoted $600. I know Canada is expensive but come on!

Get another quote... with the "highest deductible". I hate paperwork and have no plans to use the insurance for trivial stuff.

Do you travel often? Also ask for the annual plan.

I have a credit card that comes with awesome travel/medical insurance (we've used it more than once), but last time I had to buy it I got it at the grocery store! Superstore has ones you pick up for varying lengths and just call to activate. Quite reasonable priced too!

We usually just go down to our local autoplan broker as they do car insurance as well as travel/travel medical and house insurance.

We do not travel outside our home province without having travel medical insurance.

My extended health benefits at work do include a small amount of travel medical insurance coverage, but IMO not enough (it would cover something "normal" but an extraordinary and very expensive say accident with stay in an ICU would rapidly eat it up) so I buy a separate plan myself.

One thing to keep in mind if you have any pre-existing conditions is most travel medical insurance will have a pre-existing condition exclusion clause that requires a period of "stability" for coverage for those conditions.

Because this is a concern for us I purchase an annual travel medical plan that lets me have unlimited trips outside my home province for upto 35 days each in length, with I think it is $5 million in coverage. the pre-existing condition stability period is 7 days, which was the best I could find without th price being insanely high. I went through an insurance broker online to purchase it -- and they have other plans as options too.

some of the more traditional plans, e.g. those you get through your bank or in the supermarket I have seen with p-e clauses requiring as much as 180 days (6 months !!!) stability.

So make sure you read the fine print.

For the travel insurance part (cancellation, interruption, baggage loss/delay, baggage theft, etc) I have a credit card that includes this coverage as long as the whole trip is paid for through it. it also includes some medical coverage which is good if I get something new :-)

I get an annual medical plan thru Blue Cross. That covers me for 30 days at a time.

What I've found out about travel insurance that I never knew (I used to use Bcaa) is that most travel insurances will collect from your extended medical plan first before they pay out. Potentially wiping out any lifetime limit you have.

Blue Cross doesn't do this. I read about this on Dis in another travel insurance post!! So when I went to renew with BCAA I asked, and they confirmed its true. So I switched over to Blue Cross. I also get a modest 9% discount as I have their extended medical plan thru work.

Thanks guys for the help. Looks like going through my credit card would be the best bet as I don't need anything complicated. One day I shall have fancy benefits but at the moment, still young and working my way through university :)

What online website did you use?
