We are booked with Jetblue flying out of Buffalo-(we are from Ontario)

We have medical trip insurance from Co-operators

When I booked through airtran originally - flight insurance was offered and we bought it- we lost it when we cancelled- no big deal- only $60

However- when I booked with Jetblue - insurance wasn't offered-

Do I need it and can I book it separately?

TIA, Jen

It depends. If the only thing you are insuring is the airline tickets, and the cost of the insurance is much less than the amount you stand to lose if something goes wrong, then yes. But if the cost of the insurance is equal to or more than the cost of your tickets, then no, it's not a good idea.

If you are insuring more than your airline tickets (hotel package, etc.) on the same policy, then it starts to make more sense. Just keep in mind that the insurance will only cover pre-paid, non-refundable costs, and be sure to check the fine print as to what it specifically covers (especially if you are looking to insure against airline default).

Trip insurance typically has to be purchased within 14 days of making your first payment on your vacation. You are subject to pre-existing conditions and possible reduction of benefits if you purchase after that date. Again, read the fine print BEFORE you buy.

I like to start at the website insuremytrip, as they let you compare coverages from several different companies to find one that best fits what you need.

I'm a near fanatic about booking travel insurance, but I usually don't on JetBlue-I figure their re-booking fee and travel insurance are a wash. However, I bought coverage through Insuremytrip.com due to my going during hurracaine season in August.

I always deal with Access America. They have a family plan where kids under 17 are free. Adults are between about $30-$50 per person depeding on age & cost of trip.

I never buy insurance through the airline or Disney because I want it to include my air and land.

I am going to Disney with my 64 yr old mother. Insurance for us was a total of $99. I look at it like... JetBlue has a $40 fee per person(which is cheap compared to U.S. air ($100pp)

If we didn't have insurance & needed to cancel we would each have to pay $40 to JetBlue, plus we would have a credit for 1 yr., $100-$200 penalty with Disney depending on how soon prior to travel we had to cancel. So for $50 each for insurance its a bargain.
