I am looking to purchase trip insurance for my Sept cruise. I paid my deposit less than a week ago so I am within the 2 week time frame some companies require for the cancel for any reason. My question is, is that what I need to be covered for weather related cancellations? Or is there something else I need to look for? Also if I get a policy that is cancel for any reason why is there an extra option for work related cancellation? wouldn't that be covered as an "any reason"? Sorry I have never purchases this before and am afraid I won't buy the right coverage.

Also what would be good pricing? I am looking at covering $12,000. We are a family of 6.

Thanks

What one agent covers may not be what another covers even with similar terminology, so know your policy. I recommend you contact the specific agent to ask your questions. Wording (and intent) may be misconstrued and you should ask the agent directly to be sure you are purchasing what you want/need. The fine print usually provides guidance around what each section of coverage means, but it's still best to ask. If your main concern is weather, ask specifically about coverage related to weather. DCL is unlikely to cancel the cruise (very rare) but if traveling by air or even ground you could run into weather-related issues to get to your cruise. If you are concerned about work-related cancel, ask specifically about that and whether any additional waivers required to have that coverage. Ask how much is covered/reimbursed for these scenarios, as it may not be 100% back in your pocket; depends on the specific policy.

Enjoy your cruise!

As lanejudy mentioned, you need to check the individual policies. I have booked policies that include work related cancellations where they reimburse at 100% but the cancel for any reason coverage on the policy only reimburses at 75%.

On our first couple of cruises we bought the policy through the cruise line. We have purchased our insurance lately through Costco. They have been very helpful with any questions we have about coverage.

See #3 and 4. I don't know all that much, but the last time I bought trip insurance I asked specifically about weather delays, and she told me to look for something like this.

On this topic - is the DCL policy that you can purchase the best in terms of what it will cover? I know they give you quite a while to decide to purchase after you book your cruise.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they didn't cover it if I had weather/flight delays. We cruised in the winter, so that was my worry.

Unless things have changed, the policy through DCL does not cover pre-existing conditions and it only covers those portions of your trip that you book through DCL, so if you book airfare on your own it won't be covered. We have always found insurance with better coverage for better pricing on our own - there are even some companies that offer kids for free. One positive of purchasing the policy from DCL though - if you do purchase the insurance through DCL and you have to cancel and the insurance company denies your claim, DCL will give you a credit of a portion of your cruise fare to use towards another cruise.

When we bought insurance for our trip, we called an agent on the phone and they explained all of the different options for coverage and what they would cost. It made it a lot easier for us to get what we wanted without having to read a lot of fine print. Could they have been lying to us? I suppose so, but in the end, I think we got what we wanted. We were also able to go back and add on coverage for other things later like excursions. Some people might not need coverage for them, but the DCL excursions do become non-refundable like 3 days before the cruise so we wanted to be covered.
