Mom is going to the U.S. but all 3 insurance policies I found do not cover her being a type 2 diabetic and on high blood pressure meds.

Any idea how folks go with insurance? I don't think it matters the cost as long as she is covered for 7 days.

Thanks!

I have Manulife and Travel Underwriters.
Really looking for someone's experience in getting insurance for elderly person. She is in good shape but we want coverage if she goes.

sorry, not trying to hijack your thread, but doesn't everyone get insurance for themselves when they leave the country? My cousin was killed in a hit and run in North Carolina about 10 years ago, and the medical bills exceeding $750k... I won't leave the country for even a day without getting coverage on myself and my son.

I'd suggest RBC as well. They have all sorts of plans at really great rates. You can go into any bank branch to get it.

Yes, we have insurance always. It is just for an elderly person they are automatically said to have a "pre-existing" condition just based on age.
Also, number of medications regardless of ailments. You really have to read the fine print: the insurance is going to fight you if they think they don't have to pay up.
RBC is tricky too for elderly folks. I have several pamplets sitting in front of me right now. There is a huge "medical questionnaire" that goes with them.
The first is "How many meds in total do you take". Heart disqualifies you on many policies.
2nd question: Within 24 months prior have you had a mini stroke (TIA) etc, diabetes, hypertension...

Insurance can be difficult to get sometimes depending on your conitions and treatments. I have kidney issues and my specialist told me I would not be able to get travel insurance. He also told me medical care would start at around $20,000 US for my condition, if I ran into problems in the US. I was willing to pay $$$ in order to avoid a bill of over $20,000. So I contacted a travel agent friend of mine and she found me a plan. I only qualified because my medications had been stable (no increases or decreases or changes) in the last 90 days prior to departure. My age might have helped aswell because I am only in my early 30`s.

Good luck in your search! You could always try a travel agent like I did. But it looks like you don`t mind doing the leg work yourself. ;)

we have the same problem when it came to finding insurance for my 82 year old mom she takes pills for her blood pressure as well. we went with the disney insurance to get coverage, as long as she had no health problems in the past 3 months then she s covered we go in may. havent yet got all the info from disney on the insurance but we should be receiving it within the next 10 days will let you know all the details if you like just pm me:thumbsup2

My cousin recommended cooperators who insurance snowbirds from Canada, so I am checking that out too.

When we took my aunt (aged 66 at the time) - we were able to get her on the RBC deluxe package (cancellation/interruption/medical etc.). Because she was over the age-limit (of 65) for adults, she had to pay more for the policy.

My dad had a mild heart attack in mid-2007. He is also a type 2 diabetic. He was able to get insurance coverage for our December 2007 trip without any problems (he's in his 50s) because his symptoms had been stable for at least 90 days.

We've never had to actually access the insurance benefits, but it was nice to know they were there if we needed them.

Hopefully you should be able to get something worked out.

Yes, she is booked and covered for everything except High blood pressure issues which are totally under control. Thanks everyone, very helpful.
